Active Glenelg teen gets youth leadership award

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Chris Miles is described as a real good kid with a great sense of humor. It was his leadership potential, however, that netted Chris this year's Glenelg High School Hugh O'Brien Youth Foundation Maryland Leadership Award. Chris will attend an expenses-paid four-day seminar on leadership and related topics in April.

At the seminar, he will have daily interaction with leaders from industry, education, science and the government. He will also participate in field trips to educational sites. Chris has been active in the Student Government Association at Glenelg. He has played team sports, including time on the basketball team at St. Louis Catholic School, where he was a student for eight years.

The faculty and staff at St. Louis portray Chris as a congenial, respectful young man with much personality. They say he can say what is on his mind. Chris has also served on the Guidance Advisory Committee and as a peer mediator at Glenelg. He is active in the Catholic Youth Ministry program at St. Louis church. He has been involved with drama productions at the high school, and he holds a part-time job.

Christmas observances take many forms. Worshipers at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Mission will have a family Christmas celebration at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Atholton High School auditorium. This commemoration of the Christmas season will be an energetic, involved but reflective celebration. Ten-year-old Lara Santi will open the celebration with "O Come All Ye Faithful." The 30-member St. Francis of Assisi Mission Choir will perform, not just in concert, but with the participation of the audience. Choir director Mindie Santi has planned an event at which people can reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. She says that you will have a chance to relax, sing carols and listen as the Rev. Jack Kinsella reads some of his original work.

There will be scripture readings, reflections and a lot of music. You can preserve this event when you purchase a tape that the choir and Father Kinsella recorded earlier. Proceeds from the tape sales will enrich the church building fund.

Everyone is invited to join the St. Francis parishioners in their family Christmas celebration. Call 792-0470.
