Investigators unsure if fires at school are linked

Police and fire officials are investigating three fires set in the past six weeks at Randallstown High School -- but it remained unclear whether the fires were related.

Paper that was set ablaze started each of the fires -- Nov. 2, Nov. 3 and Monday -- at the school in the 4000 block of Offutt Road, said Battalion Chief Patrick T. Kelly, a Fire Department spokesman.

"Our investigators right now are trying to determine if they're related," he said. "Evidently if they are all being done at the same school, you'd think they'd have some tie to that school. But our investigators haven't turned any of that up yet."

Baltimore County police spokesman E. Jay Miller said police are also involved, but haven't determined any link between the fires.

Authorities had arrested a 16-year-old girl -- a former student at the school -- on Nov. 29 and charged her as a juvenile with first-degree arson in connection with the Nov. 2 fire.

"Whether or not that young lady had anything to do with any of the other fires is something that we have not determined," Mr. Miller said. "I certainly wouldn't describe her as a suspect in the latest ones."

Monday's fire was reported at 4:46 p.m. About $3,000 in damage was done to the music room's closet area, where choir robes, sheet music and paper products were stored.
