Old Mill's Patterson brings home title from Va. tourney

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Old Mill's Don Patterson (189) pinned one opponent and beat four others by a combined 36-8 to win the title at last Saturday's Northern Virginia Invitational at Fairfax High School.

The Patriots, who had won five straight 3A-4A state titles before placing third last season, finished sixth as Maryland's only representative in the 32-team field.

Gary Serago (125), Mike DiLeonardi (145) and Mike Hines (152) all finished third for the Patriots, and Mike Ruth (160) was seventh.

"It was a good early test for us to see how everyone is doing," said Old Mill coach Mike Hampe.

"It was also a great way for the team members to hang together and come together as a group."

Meade

Ranked county and regional champion wrestlers Mark Chesla (160) of Arundeland Adam Butts (171) of Meade remained unbeaten by winning titles in tougher than expected championship bouts at Meade on Saturday.

Defending state 3A-4A champion Chesla, ranked No. 1 in his weight class by the Maryland State Wrestling Association, held off Howard's Chris Poling long enough to secure a 7-5 victory.

Butts, a 3A-4A state runner-up last year, ground out a 6-2 decision over North Carroll's Jason Sims.

Douglass

South River's Travis Murdock (119) and Gene Reid (112) each won four matches to bring home gold medals from a 16-team tournament at Douglass of Prince George's County.

Murdock used two pins and a 10-0 major decision to reach the title bout, where he edged Northern's sixth-ranked county and regional champion Eric Miller, 4-3.

Murdock, who also has beaten Miller, 3-2, in a dual meet, is likely to have earned a state ranking with his two wins. He's also likely to see Miller in the South River tournament later this season.

Reid, who won last year's county tournament at 103 pounds, earned a 7-3 semifinal decision over Hammond's Howard County champion Mike Chang.

Also placing for the Seahawks was Rob Ogan (145, fourth), as South River finished ninth in the team standings.

Annapolis Tournament

In pacing DeMatha to a third-place finish, the Stags' top-ranked, two-time National Prep champion Todd Beckerman (119) improved to 109-1 for his career. Beckerman's only loss came by 8-7 to Northeast's Marty Kusick during his freshman season.

Fantastic freshman

In one of the most exciting title bouts of the Annapolis Tournament, St. Mary's freshman Ernie Listman (160) dropped an 8-6 decision to Altoona's Robert Horon. The match was tied at 2, 4 and 6 before Horon countered an attack by Listman for the bout-winning takedown late in the third period.
