Centennial's Kim comes out on top at Annapolis tourney

THE BALTIMORE SUN

It was his first tournament victory, but Centennial junior Joon Kim handled winning like a veteran.

The 189-pounder threw his arms in the air after scoring his fifth pin of the season in six matches over DeMatha's Josh Bender to become the Eagles' first-ever Annapolis Tournament champion.

"I felt some pressure, but I didn't worry about it," said Kim, who overcame a scoreless first period. "He was just about to get out, but I caught him."

Bender (4-1) had an earlier 6-5 semifinal upset of Southern's fourth-ranked Anne Arundel County champ, Trumaine Graves. Graves, a regional runner-up who placed fourth in last year's 1A-2A state tournament, was the top seed and expected to win the weight class.

Kim, a county third-place finisher last year, had taken just 1:08 of his semifinal bout to pin Severna Park's Jermond Davenport.

3' The Eagles, who tied for ninth with

Calvert Hall in the 16-team event (won by Altoona, Pa.), also got Jason Nagle's third-place finish at 125.

Nagle lost his semifinal bout, 6-3, to Mount St. Joseph's sixth-ranked two- time Maryland Scholastic Association runner-up Jake Lissau.

Meade Tournament

Frank Tortella (189) and T. J. Dameron (112) scored pins for titles and Eric Paskin (145) and Chris Poling (160) finished second to pace Howard (150 points) to a third-place finish at Meade, behind No. 4 North Carroll (229) and No. 14 Arundel (188).

Paskin, a county and regional champ who placed third in last year's 3A-4A state tournament, was a runner-up after a 4-1 upset loss to Eric Hott of North Carroll.

Poling, who was third in last year's regionals at 135 pounds, looked impressive in a 7-5 loss to Arundel's No. 2-ranked 3A-4A state champ Mark Chesla.

Chopticon Tournament

Glenelg's county champ Jeremy Lignelli (152) and Oakland Mills' two-time county champ Wade Mitchell (130) earned titles at Chopticon. Lignelli used a decision, a major decision and a technical fall, and Mitchell had a decision, a major decision and a pin.

Others placing for Oakland Mills were Casey Moffitt (140, second), Matt Sutton (135, third), Chris Meylor (103, third) and Chong Nguyen (125, fourth).

6* Glenelg's Jeff Feaga was third at 119.

Douglass Tournament

County champion Hammond was seventh, and Wilde Lake was 12th in the 16-team event.

Hammond's county champs Jimmy Weston (171) and Mike Chang (112) were second and third, respectively. For Wide Lake, Carlo Gerstenfeld (Hwt.) was a runner-up after dropping a 3-1 title bout decision to Eienstein's Frank Rodrigues, and teammate Brandon Viernez (140)

was fourth.

Lackey won the team title, eclipsing defending 3A-4A state champion Northern.
