Fast breaks: The Retrievers, off to their worst start in their 27-year basketball history, lost to Loyola, 67-60, in overtime on Saturday. In the overtime, UMBC took its first lead since the opening minutes of the game on a baseline jumper by junior G Tony Thompson (19 points). But Loyola scored six straight to take a four-point lead. With 8:11 remaining, Loyola led 48-31, but UMBC scored 20 of the next 23 points to tie the game at 51 with 1:25 left. Loyola twice went ahead by two but both times UMBC rallied to tie, the final time on two free throws by Thompson with eight seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

Fast breaks: David Clark had 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead Goucher (6-3) to a 95-90 victory over host Salisbury State (3-5). Kyle Jefferson led Salisbury State with 38 points. . . . Western Maryland (4-4) dropped a 108-78 decision to Gallaudet (6-3). . . . Despite 25 points from Ben Harris, Washington College (5-3) lost Rowan (7-1), 83-60, in the Wild Goose Classic championship game.
WOMEN
Fast breaks: Kwana Williams scored 17 and Kesha Camper added 16 as Maryland (4-2) held off Rutgers (2-5), 76-73. The Terps built a 64-52 lead late in the second half before Rutgers went on a 10-0 run to close to 64-62 with 4:13 remaining. Rutgers was unable to get any closer. Stephanie Cross added 13 points for the Terrapins. . . . Tournament MVP Shelly Ridgeway scored 23 points as Frostburg State (4-3) defeated Lebanon Valley (3-4), 55-45, in the Gallaudet University Invitational Tournament championship game. . . . Coppin State's Natasha Parks and Lisa Jarmon scored 15 points apiece in the Eagles' 84-59 loss to George Mason (1-4). Coppin fell to 2-4. . . . Eunice French had 12 points and 14 rebounds to lead UMBC (2-4) to a 41-37 victory over Temple (0-3). . . . Ebony Taylor scored 25 as Washington College (2-4) beat Gallaudet (2-5), 67-61. Allison Wentworth (Old Mill) added 17 points for the Shoremen. . . . Cassandra Clemons scored 15 for Goucher in the Gophers' 67-59 loss to Stony Brook. Sarah Weaver (Towson) and Alice Weaver each added 10 points for the Gophers. . . . Amy Fenzel scored 24 to lead host Salisbury State (5-2) over Marymount, 78-74.
