What a difference a day makes for Spirit, Vaccaro

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The look on Cris Vaccaro's face was different this time as he sat on his stool in the Spirit locker room.

His face had the appearance of a gathering storm the night before, but it had a more pleasant look Saturday night.

Just goes to show what a difference a night makes in the life of an indoor soccer goalie.

After being shelled for 28 points in a 30-14 loss to the Buffalo Blizzard on Friday night, Vaccaro came back to tend goal in Saturday night's tidy 11-6 victory over the Detroit Rockers. He attributed his ability to rebound like that to experience.

"I've been there before," said Vaccaro, who's in his 15th season. "I've been around too long to let one game like that affect my play. Twenty-eight points -- that's behind me. It made me mad and want to lift my game to another level."

Coach Dave MacWilliams considered starting No. 2 goalie Joe Mallia after Friday night's loss. But he went with Vaccaro because a review of the game film confirmed what he suspected, that many of the goals weren't entirely Vaccaro's fault.

"Eleven were from inside the box, right on Cris," MacWilliams said. "They're hard to stop. He wasn't getting enough help. Our No. 1 priority Saturday night was to get back defensively and minimize their chances."

In that respect, the Spirit succeeded. Vaccaro held Detroit to two points until six minutes into the fourth quarter. During one stretch, the Rockers went 23 minutes, eight seconds without a point.

"Doubt in myself never entered my mind," Vaccaro said. "I couldn't wait to play again."

MacWilliams vows the Spirit will build on Saturday's victory. One good game after Friday's embarrassment, in which "we stopped playing" as the score mounted, is not enough.

"We've got to be more consistent," MacWilliams said. "This was only one game."

The win prevented the second-place Spirit (9-5) from falling further behind the Cleveland Crunch, the National Professional Soccer League's American Division leader. With the victory over Detroit, the Spirit is 4-0 against National Division teams.

Next is a trip to Harrisburg on Saturday night to play the Heat.
