Town Council to dedicate mayors' wall of fame

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Hampstead's wall of fame honoring past mayors since 1892 will be dedicated at the Town Council meeting at 7:30 p.m.

tomorrow.

Town officials have been working on the project, gathering photos or portraits of Hampstead's 14 leaders, since last fall. The renditions were copied and restored by Westminster photographer Bob Porterfield.

Each 8-by-10 photo has been matted, framed and identified with years of service.

Hampstead's Town Council is also scheduled to hear public comments about rezoning Roberts Field Business Center from a general business to a local business zone.

Local business zoning, designed to provide retail services to a residential community, is more restrictive than general business use. Veterinary clinics, bowling alleys and hotels are some uses allowed in general business zoning but prohibited in local business districts.

Councilman Wayne Thomas proposed the change at the council's Nov. 8 meeting after the town's Planning and Zoning Commission rejected a similar recommendation at its Oct. 24 meeting.

Concerns about the zoning arose when plans for a tract of Roberts Field Business Center came before the commission.

Some residents of the adjoining neighborhood expressed opposition to the proposed uses -- a Wendy's restaurant, a Blockbuster Video and a Yingling General Tire center -- for the site.

The property's owners have since indicated that contracts for the video and tire stores have fallen through.

At their Nov. 29 meeting, council members voted to revise the entire ordinance governing general business zoning.

Under the proposed revisions, Hampstead's Board of Zoning Appeals would have the final say over whether some property uses, such as truck terminals or golf driving ranges, would be allowed in general business zones.

Planning and Zoning Commission members argued that many of the general business zone uses would not be appropriate anywhere in Hampstead because of a lack of land.
