Neutrals may be ready to fade away

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Have neutrals run their course in home furnishings? A report in the Trend Curve, a newsletter of marketing directions for the home furnishings industry, says, "Early fatigue with the palette is being detected."

While beiges, linens and creams are likely to be with us for some time yet, look for coffees, browns and grays to dominate and colors to become more colorful.

Furniture magazine debuts

Taunton Press, publisher of Fine Woodworking, has a new quarterly magazine out called Home Furniture. The glossy new publication tackles subjects ranging from ergonomics to choosing hardware and showcases the work of contemporary furniture makers. You can get the premiere issue, winter 1994, free by calling (800) 888-8286. A subscription is $20 a year.

More on furniture making and magazines: Baltimore woodworker John Alexander is featured in the current issue of Better Homes and Gardens' Wood magazine, in an article on the art of chair-making.

Little chairs

And speaking of chairs and trends, what could be hotter right now than miniatures -- in this case, miniature chairs?

Surely the cutest little home book of the holiday season is "Chairmania: Fantastic Miniatures" (Harry N. Abrams Inc.). It will delight readers with more than 275 Lilliputian chairs from the collection of George M. Beylerian. Some are authentic, like a perfect little Adirondack chair. But many are pure fantasy, made of beads or theater tickets or even knives and forks! Before you hire a contractor to work on your home, you might want to do a little homework yourself. Comprehensive Housing Assistance Inc. (CHAI) is holding a workshop next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. on consumers' legal rights, home improvement contracts and general information protecting the homeowner. It will be held at the CHAI offices, 5721 Park Heights Ave. CHAI is the community development and housing agency of the Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore. For more information, call (410) 466-1990.
