Aberdeen Eagles
1993-94 record: 7-12. Coach: Sanciarhea Jones.
Top players: Jessica Soler, 5-9, Sr., C; Pamela Bess, 5-4, Jr., F; Julie France, 5-8, Jr., F; Nichole Motley, 5-4, Jr., G.
Outlook: The first-year coach has only two holdovers, Soler and Bess, and success will be determined by how long it takes to mesh the various skills. All will have to contribute, as there is no dominant player.
Bel Air Bobcats
1993-94 record: 5-13. Coach: Valerie Cooper.
Top players: Jackie Hinson, 5-11, Jr., C; Katie Merrick, 5-8, Sr., F; Amy Whitsel, 5-11, Sr., F; Jean Tyrell, 5-6, Sr., G; Lynn Wilkinson, 5-4, Jr., G.
Outlook: Cooper has three experienced seniors as the foundation for her first team and sees an improved record as the first goal.
C. Milton Wright Mustangs
1993-94 record: 14-7. Coach: Gloria Liedlich.
Top players: Amanda Moculski, 5-10, Jr., F; Emily Steinmetz, 5-8, Jr., F; Erin Updegrove, 5-9, Jr., F; Miranda James, 5-8, Jr., G.
Outlook: An upgraded schedule of Class 3A and 4A teams should help the Mustangs prepare for the county schedule where Liedlich expects to be competitive. The returning starters have experience to go with their speed and quickness, with Updegrove and James expected to be the statistical leaders.
Edgewood Rams
1993-94 record: 4-14. Coach: Matt Rankin.
Top players: Karly Crawford, 6-1, Soph., C; Rebecca Lesesne, 5-7, Sr., F; Nicole Bazile, 5-5, Jr., G; Danielle Whyte, 5-7, Jr., G.
Outlook: This is a young, relatively inexperienced team, as only two of the 11 players are seniors.
Fallston Cougars
1993-94 record: 21-1. Coach: Nancy Ferguson.
Top players: Candy Credito, 6-1, Sr., C; Jenny Weber, 5-9, Sr., F; Lori Heffley, 5-4, Sr., G.
Outlook: Situation normal -- primed and ready for another assault on what so far has been an elusive state championship. There are three seniors who have been part of three successive state losses -- a 1A final, a 1A semifinal and a 2A semifinal, but there are seven sophomores and juniors who saw considerable playing time last year.
Harford Christian Eagles
1993-94 record: 19-3. Coach: Brian Akers.
Top players: Jettie Moir, 5-11, Sr., C; Jen Lowenstein, 5-8, Sr., F; Suzanne Akers, 5-4, Sr., G; Becky Geisendaffer, 5-8, Sr., G.
Outlook: Four starters and all the reserves return, giving promise of a very successful season. With Player of the Year Laura Thomas gone, the scoring and rebounding -- a particular strength -- will have to be spread around. The improvement of the bench players will provide depth and versatility.
Harford Tech Cobras
1993-94 record: No team. Coach: Kim Hax.
Top players: Melissa Preston, 5-9, Soph., C; Jen Fischer, 5-9, Sr., F; Poppy Rupert, 5-6,
Sr., F; Connie Beulah, 5-4, Jr., G; Somer Sawyer, 5-4, Fresh., G; Pam Surette, 5-4, Sr., G; Penny Surette, 5-3, Fresh., G.
Outlook: Hax will be concentrating on fundamentals and improving skills, as the school resumes the sport after a three-year break.
Havre de Grace Warriors
1993-94 record: 0-18. Coach: Kathy Graybeal.
Top players: Judy Evans, 5-10, Sr., C; Zakiyya Muhammad, 5-7, Jr., F; Vini Taylor, 5-6, Jr., F; Kim Green, 5-5, Jr., G; Raven Reedy, 5-6, Soph., G.
Outlook: With some improved offense, narrow losses of a year ago could become wins, but any win will provide some confidence.
John Carroll Patriots
1993-94 record: 4-16. Coach: Kathleen Shannon.
Top players: Amy Goetzinger, 5-8, Jr., F; Heather Pyzik, 5-9, Sr., F; Jessica Schrader, 5-10, Sr., F; Meaghan Giorno, 5-1, Jr., G.
Outlook: First-year coach Shannon, backed by a strong recreation program background, and a 20-2 Catholic League JV title at Mercy last year, inherits a team with size and speed,
albeit a young one, as there are three sophomores and three freshmen among 11 players. This unit will be defense-minded (a 20-point lead on Joppatowne in the third quarter of the opener for both teams) and will get better as the players and coaches blend their skills.
Joppatowne Mariners
1993-94 record: 18-4. Coach: Lynette Shelley.
Top players: Brandi Barnes, 6-1, Jr., C; Keya Atkins, 5-11, Sr., F; Kelly Dehne, 5-11, Soph., F; Erica Adams, 5-9, Sr., G; Lisa Maly, 5-3, Sr., G.
Outlook: Barnes is the only returning starter from last year's state Class 1A state finalist and it showed in the opener. Shelley sees the younger ones learning quickly and expects the team to be competitive.
North Harford Hawks
1993-94 record: 13-6. Coach: Lin James.
Top players: Melinda Virts, 5-8, Sr., C; Anastasia Colletta, 5-7, Sr., F; Stacy Drega, 5-8, Sr., F; Trish Grubb, 5-10, Jr., F; Melissa Storrs, 5-6, Sr., F; Jaime Moser, 5-6, Sr., G.
Outlook: The team lost three starters, but Virts (8.3 rpg) is one of five experienced seniors. Six newcomers are underclassmen and their progress could help this team make things interesting later in the season.
