Western Maryland College recently named Sharon Bean and Gail Cohen Shaivitz associate directors of major gifts to oversee the school's fund-raising efforts.
Before coming to WMC, Ms. Bean was assistant director of annual and special gifts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., and membership and marketing director of the Capital District YMCA in Albany, N.Y.
She also has worked as development manager of the American Heart Association in Fairfield County, Conn.
In 1991, she was named Employee of the Year for her work in building grass-roots volunteer organizations as community manager of eastern Fairfield County. A resident of Germantown, she holds a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in business from Villanova University.
Ms. Shaivitz previously worked at Goucher College as assistant to the political science department chairman. She also worked with professor Maryann Feldman as project manager of a Small Business Administration contract called "The Nature of Small Firm Innovation in the Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Baltimore-Washington Areas."
She has been a study skills tutor for the Sylvan Learning Center and has volunteered with The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore. Ms. Shaivitz, who lives in Pikesville, holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy and political science from Goucher and is a registered nurse.
