Members of GOP club assume new posts
Several members of the Anne Arundel County Republican Women's Club recently were elected or appointed to positions around the state.
* Donica Brown of Annapolis was appointed southern regional chairman of the Maryland State Federation of Republican Women.
* Helen Fister, former club president, was recently elected chairwoman of the Republican State Central Committee of Anne Arundel County.
* Janet Greenip was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates, District 33.
* Mary Jackson was elected judge of the Orphan's Court.
* Associate member John Leopold was elected to the House of Delegates for District 31.
Smoke detector day scheduled in Annapolis
The Anne Arundel County Economic Opportunity Committee (AACEOC) Inc. will sponsor a Smoke Detector Installation Sign-Up Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at AACEOC headquarters, 251 West St., Annapolis.
Fire officials will distribute literature and show a children's video on fire prevention and fire safety.

Bay foundation honored by association
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation recently received national jTC recognition for its work to save the bay, from the American Water Resources Association.
The association is a national organization dedicated to providing a forum to promote education, cooperation and information exchange to support water resources management.
Habitat for Humanity needs buildable lots
Arundel Habitat for Humanity needs buildable lots in Anne Arundel County to provide homes for families living in substandard conditions.
The nonprofit group, which builds low-cost housing for needy families, is looking for land in South County and Annapolis to buy or to accept as donations.
Arundel Habitat for Humanity also is looking for storage space in the county for building materials.
The nonprofit organization builds houses for low-income working families "at cost," and needs 1,000 to 5,000 square feet for six months or more.

Nominations accepted for annual Pace Award
The Anne Arundel County Human Relations Commission will accept nominations for the Dallas G. Pace Sr. Human Relations Award through Dec. 31.
The award is presented each year at the Martin Luther King Memorial Breakfast, scheduled for Jan. 16 at the Ramada Inn in Annapolis.
The award recognizes the achievements of a person who has worked to improve human relations in the county.
Energy aid program available to residents
The Anne Arundel County Economic Opportunity Committee has begun offering assistance to county residents through the Maryland Energy Assistance Program.
The assistance will be available through March 15 and will provide aid to renters, homeowners and mobile home owners who cannot pay their winter heating bills.

Library offers aid for the handicapped
The county library system offers a number of services to individuals with limited sight, hearing impairments or other handicaps.
Library collections include books in large print, and reservations can be made for a talking book service operated by the Maryland State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
For those with hearing impairments, the library offers FM loop sound amplifiers, which can be borrowed from the North County library or sent to another branch for pickup.
Two TDD lines are available to help with communication by phone to the Eastport-Annapolis Neck Branch (263-1366) and North County Area Library (787-0236).
The library can arrange to have sign-language interpreters available for library-sponsored programs with one week's advance notice.
Car-A-Van delivers books and other library materials to county residents who are homebound because of age, illness, disability or injury.
The Car-A-Van also responds to information requests (Car-A-Van, 222-6270).
