RECREATION ROUNDUP

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Ice hockey

* 12-13 boys -- Five and counting.

That's how many games the Howard County Youth Hockey League Pee Wee A Huskies have consecutively put into the win column after two victories last weekend.

The Columbia team first downed Chevy Chase, 4-3, then took the measure of Northern Virginia, 7-3, in Capital Beltway league action.

Phil Down's breakaway goal with 23 seconds left in regulation -- his second of the game -- was the difference against Chevy Chase. Other Husky goals were scored by Drew Zinchiak and Nick Graves, with Derek Williams, Down and Mitch Dolinka picking up assists.

Goalie Jason Milke kept HCYHC in the game with seven third-period saves.

Against Northern Virginia, the Huskies scored early and often.

Dolinka opened the scoring 49 seconds into the game on an assist by Graves, and the Huskies built a 4-0 lead after the first period on goals by Danny Fritz, Justin Bridle and Chris Feeney.

Keith Milli also scored two goals, and Zinchiak added another to complete the scoring. The local team's defense of Nick Zahrobsky, Matt Scott, Chris Kaiser, Robby Falk, Jeff Dinoto and Fritz held Northern Virginia in check, even while playing a man down much of the way.

* 10-11 boys -- In Squirt A play over the weekend, the Howard County Youth Hockey Club came away with a loss and a tie in two games.

On Saturday, the Huskies dropped a 4-2 decision to the Hershey, Pa. Bears at Twin Ponds, Pa. The Columbia team played even with the Bears until late in the game, when Hershey scored two goals to seal the win.

Wayne Lamanna and Thomas LaCour scored for HCYHC, with assists going to Chuck Henn and Adam Levine.

On Sunday, however, the Huskies pulled out a 3-3 tie against Montgomery at Fort Dupont in Washington.

The Huskies led, 3-1, in the third period before giving up two goals down the stretch. Henn, Jonathan Martinez and Lamanna scored Huskies goals, with assists by Levine (two), Daniel Baron, Dominic Uccellini and Danny Buswell.

Gymnastics

The Columbia Gymnastics team fared well at last weekend's Harford Holiday Meet.

Erika Strauss led the way in Level 5, winning the vault (9.15), taking third on the beam (8.20), seventh on the uneven bars (7.75) and 10th on the floor (8.15) for an all-around score of 33.25 -- good enough for second place overall.

Katie Bonomo (28.20) and Elizabeth Donnelly (18.15) also did well in the class.

In Level 6, Lindsay Derenberger and Katie Muth both finished in the top 10 for the all-around.

Derenberger took third on the beam (8.30) and floor (8.70), fifth on the vault (8.50) and sixth on the bars (7.85), finishing third overall (33.35). Muth captured sixth overall (32.30), with her best scores coming in the vault (fourth place, 8.55) and the floor (fifth, 8.65).

Basketball

* 13-year-old girls -- The 1981 Howard County Youth Program Cougars had a busy weekend, splitting four games in various leagues and tournaments.

They started things off Thursday with a 43-28 loss to Western Howard County in the semifinals of the Arbutus Thanksgiving Tournament. The Cougars were led by Alexia Vogler (eight points), Jane Williams (six) and Tia Richardson (five), while Lauren Martin (18) and Katie Madden (14) paced the victors.

HCYP came back on Saturday morning to score a 27-18 win over Fallston in the Loch Raven League. Williams (eight) and Colleen Cox (five) helped the Cougars put on a fourth-quarter run that insured them the victory.

Later that day, the weary Cougars opened the GORC Christmas Tournament with a listless performance against Severna Park, falling, 39-16. Rebecca Hernandez, Vogler and Richardson each scored four.

But the Cougars rebounded on Sunday, avenging the earlier loss to Western Howard, 31-21. Jennifer Westervelt led the Cougars' stifling defense, while Vogler (nine points), Cox (seven) and Lisa Chapman (four) paced the offense.

Madden led Western Howard with 10 points, and Krissie Brust and Martin scored six and five, respectively.

* 10-12 boys -- After last weekend's 26-25 loss to the Irish, the Huskies became The Supreme Sports Club's final team to fall from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Jamal Middleton led the Irish (5-2) with 17 points, while Eric Jones and Mike Ellis contributed eight points each for the 6-1 Huskies.

Something had to give when the 1-5 Seminoles stepped onto the court with the 1-5 Terps.

For the Terps it was Philip Pinkham and Bill Martinez who were doing most of the taking. Each player scored 16 points, and Greg Mace added 10 to lift the Terps to a 46-28 victory. Daniel Murray scored 22 to lead the Seminoles.

* 8-10 boys -- Led by Kenny Johnston's eight points, the Junior Sonics pulled off a 19-18 win over the Junior Mavericks. It was the first win in eight tries for the Sonics, while the Mavericks, led by David Lucks (10 points) fell to 5-2.

The Junior Bulls continued to roll, improving to 6-1 with a 28-16 win over the Junior Blazers. Brian Cunningham led the victors with a game-high 12 points, while David Pope Davis led the Blazers (2-5) with 10.

* 13-15 boys -- Derwin Simpson scored 20 points and Ryan Howard added 13 to help the Bullets move over the .500 mark with a 66-56 win over the Kings. Joe Iannavina scored 20 and T.J. Welsh 18 for the Kings (5-2). The Bullets moved to 4-3.

The Sonics got a game-high 27 points from Matt Deuchler en route to a 68-49 victory over the winless Celtics.

Jason Ortega (13 points) and Derek Ritzenberg (11) also helped the Sonics (5-2) on offense, while Garth DeAngelis (22) and Jeff Coletta (16) paced the Kings.

* High School -- The Bulls showed why they're favored to win the league, showing no mercy in a 114-29 win over the Suns.

Peter Stathopouler led all scorers, pacing the Bulls (6-1) with 43 points. He was followed by Chris Ralph (30), Tari Mitchell (16) and T.J. Welsh (13).

Mike Brown led the Suns (3-4) with 14 points.

The Rockets improved to 4-3 with a 76-55 win over the Magic -- as Brian Goode and Derwin Simpson paved the way with 25 and 16 points, respectively -- and the Knicks inched toward the .500 mark with a 67-42 victory over the Hornets, as Willie Edison scored 20 and Tony Howard added 17.
