Boy stabs man who attacked his mother

An 8-year-old boy who saw his mother being attacked at her Oakland Mills home Sunday evening stabbed the man with a kitchen knife, Howard County police said.

According to police, a man forced his way into the woman's home about 7:49 p.m. Sunday and attacked her. The child, who was nearby, reacted by stabbing the man.

The woman and her son were not injured in the incident, and no disciplinary actions were planned against the child, police said.

Police charged Michael Anthony Smith, 32, of the 5200 block of Rivendell Lane, Harper's Choice with breaking and entering and assault.

A District Court commissioner released him yesterday morning on personal recognizance.

Mr. Smith was treated for a minor stab wound at Howard County General Hospital and released, police said.

* Owen Brown: 6400 block of Dobbin Road: An officer responding to an alarm at a business Sunday morning found the front door broken. Police said the store had been ransacked and several video game cartridges were found scattered inside and outside.
