'Frasier' repeats one of the series' best

THE BALTIMORE SUN

An old "Frasier" and a new "NYPD Blue" brighten the evening, and most other offerings deaden it.

* "Something Wilder" (8:30-9 p.m., Channel 2) -- New night! New time! Same show! However, this week's episode, in its quest to lure additional viewers, is playing a Trump card: The guest star is Marla Maples Trump, playing a woman with a reputation as a home-wrecker. Supply your own punch line. NBC.

* "Frasier" (9-9:30 p.m., Channel 2) -- After reading a romantic best-seller about unrequited love, Frasier realizes the story is about him as a youth, written by his former piano teacher, and he sets out to renew old acquaintances. Wonderful acting and peerless writing serve up loud belly laughs while still remaining true to the characters. This repeat is one of the best "Frasier" episodes so far. NBC.

* "Come Die With Me: A Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer Mystery" (9-11 p.m., Channel 11) -- If I had this "Hammer," I'd toss it in the morning. Rob Estes, whose youthful good looks serve him well on USA Network's "Silk Stalkings," plays a newer and younger Mike Hammer without improving, or even occupying, the character at all. Hammer has tough gumshoes to fill, and Estes simply doesn't measure up. Surprisingly, though, Pamela Anderson of "Baywatch" does measure up as Hammer's sexy secretary, Velda. CBS.

* "NYPD Blue" (10-11 p.m., Channel 13) -- On tonight's show, Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) reverses his usual relationship with his Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor Dan (guest star Peter Boyle) and comes to his aid for a change. ABC.

Cable

* "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" (10-11 p.m., VH1) -- Why in the world would VH1 repeat an old episode of this tacky concert series? And why in the same world would I recommend it? Because, as part of the network's Eagles week, this installment of "Rock Concert" features the Eagles with Linda Ronstadt -- an interesting pairing.

* "South of Sunset" (11 p.m.-midnight, VH1) -- Speaking of the Eagles: Here's another episode of the 1993 CBS action series, starring Glenn Frey. This one never was shown by CBS, so consider it a VH1 world premiere. Then consider, for yourself, whether you're interested in tuning in.
