Firefighters sponsor 'Adopt-A-Family'

Several holiday events have been scheduled by the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department for the fortunate and not-so-fortunate our community.

Members are sponsoring a sharing project, "Adopt-A-Family for the Holidays," that will ensure turkey dinners for needy families in the Ferndale-Linthicum-Glen Burnie area.

Canned goods, new toys and cash donations will help the volunteers provide a Christmas meal for families and gifts for the children.

The program will run until Dec. 21. Bring a contribution to the firehouse, 4 S. Broadview Blvd., or drop it off at the Roy Rogers at Burwood Plaza.

* Sunday will be Santa's fifth year to make a run through Ferndale. He will start out at 1 p.m. at Ferndale Elementary School, travel to North Glen Elementary School at 1:45 p.m. and finish up at George Cromwell Elementary at 2:30 p.m.

Children will want to look for him as he comes down their streeor go to one of the schools.

As he travels his route, he and his helpers will collect canned goods, new toys and cash donations for the needy.

* The volunteers are conducting Fire Safety Night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at McDonald's, 6909 Ritchie Highway, next to Checkers.

Sparky the Dog will have candy canes and coloring books about fire safety to give each child. A Ferndale fire engine and ambulance will be in the parking lot.

Children under 12 will receive a free ice cream cone if they donate a canned good. McDonald's will donate 20 percent of its profits to the volunteers' program to help the needy.

This year the Linthicum Community Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. Sunday in front of the Linthicum Elementary School on Camp Meade Road.

The program will include music, food, refreshments and a visit from Santa, and will take place outdoors weather permitting.

In the event of inclement weather, the program will be moved to the school auditorium. Food or cash donations for the North County Emergency Outreach Network will be accepted.

The ceremony is sponsored by the Linthicum-Shipley Improvement Association. David Gormley is chairman of the event.

Boy Scout Troop 550 recently returned from a week of orienteering at the McKeldin Area of Patapsco State Park.

The troop joined 700 other Scouts and 300 adult leaders in exercising and sharpening the orienteering portion of their Scouting skills. The older Scouts participated in relay, route and score orienteering while the younger Scouts worked on map skills.

The Scouts were led over the weekend by Senior Patrol Leader Eli Senter. Other Scouts in attendance were John Henkel, Sean Jennings, Phil Pitts, John Rouse, David Starr, Scott Taylor and Jim Turping.

Adults involved were Scoutmaster Bruce Henkel, Assistant Scoutmasters John McCarthy and Brian Senter and Committeemen Joe LaSpina and Larry Jennings.

The next camp out will be Dec. 16-18.

The troop is sponsored by the Linthicum Elementary School Parent-Teachers Association. For details or further information, call Joe Hyla at 766-8981.

Santa's Secret Workshop will be open at Linthicum Elementary School this week. Today will be a browsing day for the students, giving them the opportunity to view the many items that will be for sale.

Tomorrow through Thursday will be the purchasing days for the classes. Friday morning the shop will be open for anyone to visit.

The shop will have a variety of items for parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Prices range from 25 cents to $10. Most of the gifts for parents and grandparents are priced from $3 to $8.50. Parents are encouraged to make this an enjoyable learning experience for their children by helping them choose items and prices that fit their budgets.

The Ferndale United Methodist Women will participate iservices Sunday. Installation of officers for 1995 will take place in Fellowship Hall, with refreshments afterward.

The women taking office and committee chairmanships are: Barbara Owens, president; Ida Lindner, vice president and global concerns; Wanda Eschenbach, secretary; Vivian Hines, treasurer; Audrey Roat, secretary for financial interpretation and Christian personhood; Anna Ford, membership chairwoman; Scarlett Brumm, supportive community; Evelyn Arnold, Christian social involvement and program resources; Lorenn Grogan, flowers and gifts; and Faye Deli, publicity and nominating committee for 1995.

* Group members can share holiday fun and fellowship at the Christmas party at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 in the church hall.

Anyone who would like to participate in a $5 gift exchange is welcome.

Bring in goodies for sharing, as well as some cookies to be shared with shut-ins. At the meeting, members will be given a gift to accompany the cookie treat for the shut-in.
