Ellicott Mills Middle School is housed in an old building, but the computer equipment is state-of-the-art.
Ellicott Mills students have access to laser disks, Internet and other up-to-date computer technology. In addition, the school has a technology resource team, composed of five interdisciplinary teachers who work to incorporate technology in the curriculum. Rick Marquart, technology team member and an eighth-grade teacher at the school, wants to give parents a chance to learn about the technology that their children use at school.
Parents' Technology Night will take place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Staff will demonstrate computers used at the school and give parents some hands-on experiences. The staff is offering door prizes and refreshments.
The evening also will celebrate a new business-to-school partnership with Chevy Chase Bank, Dorsey Search Branch. The bank's manager, Peter Lagow, is involved with technology, and aids the school's technology resource team.
Mr. Marquart also will give parents a chance to order CD-ROMs and software at an educator's discount. Order forms will be available that evening.

Manor Woods Elementary School, our county's newest elementary school, has just elected its council from students in the third through five grades.
The president is Kristen Friend; vice president, Daniel Partyka; secretary, Brad Monachino; and treasurer, Andy Lucas.
The student council's first order of business was to vote on a school mascot and school colors.
They took suggestions from all grades and, inspired by the success of the recent film "The Mighty Ducks," the school voted overwhelmingly to be the Manor Woods Ducks, with the colors of teal and maroon.
In the next business of the year, the student council sponsored a food drive to benefit FISH of Howard County, a vital county emergency service.
Students also held the fall Spirit Drive, when sweat shirts and T-shirts with the new mascot were sold.
Parents of the Ducks, note that the next PTA Executive Board meeting is tomorrow in the school's Media Center.
The Music Department and PTA welcome everyone to the next PTA general meeting and winter concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 19.
