Selling your craft

Your friends are saying you really should try to sell those beautiful earrings you make as a hobby. Or you feel your paper art is unique and you think there's a market out there for it. Where do you start?

A new book, "Crafting as a Business" (Chilton, $19.95), may help. answers such questions as which handmade crafts sell best and how to get orders from buyers, gives techniques for do-it-yourself advertising and explains how to price and market your product from home.

Author Wendy Rosen will hold a book signing at Borders in Towson Saturday at 12:30 p.m. When she appeared on QVC a couple of weeks ago, "Crafting as a Business" sold out in a matter of minutes.

Collecting the unusual, then setting up shop and holding a sale

Barbara Shapiro and Ann Jacobson, professional shoppers extraordinaire, are holding their holiday gift show next week in the Village Square Room of the Cross Keys Inn. Their business, Collections, Etc., doesn't have a home of its own. Instead the two women spend most of their time shopping for unusual antiques, accessories and gifts both new and old, then set up shop and put on a sale.

Hours are Tuesday, 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., and Wednesday and Thursday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Call (410) 323-5756 for more

information.

Stop and shop and dine

Who would think to Christmas shop in a restaurant? But then how many restaurants have their own market -- in this case, Woody's, between Linwood's and Due.

The attraction here is the Tuscan-style platters that customers have admired ever since designer Alexander Baer commissioned them from California artist Pat de Martini Ryerson and hung them in Due. When people wanted to buy them right off the wall, owners Linwood and Ellen Dame decided to sell a variety of the handmade and hand-glazed ceramic serving pieces in their market. Each one is unique, and prices start at $130. Woody's is located at 25 Crossroads Drive, Owings Mills.
