Scott Wagner of Leisure World Golf Club in Silver Spring is the new president of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Golf Course Superintendents. The annual election was held last week during a meeting of the organization at Turf Valley Resort & Country Club.
Wagner, who succeeds Lou Rudinski of Eisenhower GC, heads a slate that lists Bill Shirk, Queenstown Harbor Golf Links, vice president; Mike Gilmore, Turf Valley CC, secretary; and Dean Graves, Bethesda CC, treasurer, plus directors Gregg Rosenthal, Little Bennett GC in Clarksburg (Montgomery County), and Gordon Caldwell, Green Spring Valley Hunt Club.
The meeting marked the end of a seven-year association with the board of directors for Steve Potter of Woodholme CC, who served as the immediate past president during the last year.
Several members were among the more than 40 registrants who participated in a two-day regional seminar conducted by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America at Turf Valley. Randy Russell and Ron Forse conducted the program on the design and restoration of golf courses.
Junior stars
Jenny Chuasiriporn, 17, of Timonium, has been named to the girls first team of the American Junior Golf Association's Rolex All-American squads. The Notre Dame Prep senior had three wins among her nine top-five finishes.
She was honored during the recent Rolex Junior Golf Classic in Tucson, Ariz., an event in which she was the medalist in a select 54-player field with par matching rounds of 72-72--144 at the La Paloma CC.
With the low 16 advancing to match play, Chuasiriporn lost in the first round to Betty Chen, of La Quinta, Calif., 3 and 2. Chen, who gained the last qualifying spot out of a three-way playoff, reached the semifinals before losing. Grace Park, 15, of Phoenix, the Junior Player of the Year, won the championship.
Among the boys, Miguel Rivera, of Joppa, a John Carroll High School senior, failed to qualify for match play after rounds of 84-80--164.
New venture
Meg Gilmore, who worked in retail buying and selling at Watson's Garden Center for 15 years, and happened to play golf, is now in golf full time.
"Recent surveys have shown the area of women's golf is the fastest-growing part of the industry. As a result, I saw the possibility of a need for a women's golf shop -- to concentrate on their needs."
Within the last year, that idea has grown into Lady's Tee Time, a shop that opened recently in the Timonium Shopping Center.
"I needed a change and a chance to grow in the business," the Baltimore native and graduate of Notre Dame Prep and Towson State said. "It was a gamble because I didn't know clothes, but I did know retail."
Although there are similarities with past jobs, this one looms as the greatest challenge. Still, she sees it as relative to the industry: "It's about women. It's about golf. It's about time."
