Delaware State downs UMBC, 61-56 STATE WOMEN

Angela Frett scored 17 points and Alfreda Jefferson added 14, leading Delaware State (2-1) to a 61-56 victory over UMBC (0-4) in the first round of the UMBC Retriever Women's Invitational yesterday.

Delaware State advanced to today's championship game at 3. It will play East Carolina, which defeated Columbia, 80-30, in the other first-round matchup.

Eunice French had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Retrievers, who play Columbia in the consolation at 1.

Frett's three-pointer with 1:39 left tied the score at 56. After a missed shot by UMBC, Karen Johnson gave the Lady Hornets their first lead since early in the first half with a 12-foot jumper for a 58-56 lead. After a UMBC turnover, Frett made the front end of a one-and-one with 28 seconds left, and Johnson sank two more free throws with seven seconds left to seal the win.

UMBC made just seven of 18 free throws and committed 25 turnovers.

* Loyola 76, UNC-Greensboro 68: Patty Stoffey scored 36 points, leading Loyola (3-0) over North Carolina-Greensboro in the first round of the Powerbar Invitational at Brown University in Providence, R.I.

Stoffey, who was 14-for-19 from the field, also pulled down eight rebounds. Camille Joyner contributed 14 points and five assists.

* American 74, Towson State 49: Freshman forward Mary Klima scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds as visiting American University (2-0) defeated Towson State (0-3). Junior forward Ally Baker added 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Kim Schaffrick led the Tigers with 11 points and Tanya Belair had 10.

* Georgetown 81, Mount St. Mary's 73: Senior guard Colleen Hanrahan scored a career-high 34 points to lead the Hoyas (1-2) to an overtime victory against visiting Mount St. Mary's (1-2).

Vania Cooke of Georgetown scored the first three points in overtime and the Hoyas made five of six free throws to seal the win. Amy Langville led Mount St. Mary's with 14 points.

* Salisbury State 61, Barton 59: Nicole Urban's two free throws with two seconds left lifted Salisbury State (3-2) over Barton (4-2) in the championship game of the Salisbury State Optimist Classic. Kristi Kauffman led all scorers with 26 points for Salisbury State.

* Notre Dame 69, Manhattanville 55: Emily Yanero (Mount Hebron) scored 18 points and Tammy Valentic contributed 17, leading visiting College of Notre Dame past Manhattanville. Jen Chaney scored 15 points for College of Notre Dame.
