William Meyerson
School: Dunloggin Middle School
Hometown: Ellicott City
Age: 10
In October, William won first place at the annual Maryland Mathalon competition, sponsored by the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Last year he participated in the Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth math competition and took first place for fifth- and sixth-graders.
In the recent competition, William had a perfect score in the individual competition, outscoring nearly 200 middle school participants from around the state.
The sixth-grader participates in sports outside of school. He plays ice hockey in the Middle House League and in-line skating hockey with his friends. He also plays baseball in the Columbia Youth Baseball Association.
William helps with food drives at the Columbia Jewish Congregation.
His parents are Michael Meyerson and Lesly Burger. William has an 8-year-old brother, Andy.
His father says William has always liked math and that he does well in all his subjects.
Plans: William says he would like to pursue more math studies in high school and possibly be a tutor.
His comments: "I like English, science, history and geography as well as math. I like math because of its order and the way things fall into place and the fact that any random string of numbers is a new number."
On his award: "They took the best four people in 50 schools of Maryland and we all competed. Some of the problems were hard but I took first place."
