* Without publicity, ceremony or fanfare, Antony Armstrong-Jones, Earl of Snowdon, slipped quietly into Carroll County Wednesday, photographed artist Clyfford Still and left, just as quietly as he came. Lord Snowdon, a noted photographer and husband of Princess Margaret of England, came to the county to photograph Mr. Still, a New Windsor resident who is one of the leaders of American abstract expressionism. -- Democratic Advocate, Nov. 10, 1969.

* The national election on Tuesday resulted in a landslide for the Democrats. On the crest of a tremendous victory wave, President Roosevelt rode to enhanced prestige and power in America and the warring world. Carroll County went to Dewey by 4,484. Roosevelt did not carry a precinct. -- Democratic Advocate, Nov. 3, 1944.

* Discovered in an attempt to rob the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Coblentz at Braddock Heights early Wednesday morning, an unidentified white man seized a rifle and attempted to kill Miss Irma A. Bradshaw, the 21-year-old daughter of Mrs. Coblentz. The hammer of the weapon snapped harmlessly on an empty breech, after which the intruder escaped. Miss Bradshaw was awakened by a noise at her window. She saw a man peering into her room. He entered her room and walked toward her bed. He seized a folded sheet and was about to bind the young woman when she drew a revolver from under her pillow and pointed it at the intruder. He seized a rifle standing in a corner of the room and climbed out on the porch roof. He aimed the rifle at Miss Bradshaw and pulled the trigger. The fact that the weapon was not loaded saved the life of the young woman. -- Union Bridge Pilot, Nov. 14, 1919.
