Three youths beat, attempt to rob man
Three youths beat a Glen Burnie man and tried to rob him Thursday morning as he walked to his job at the Glen Burnie post office, police said.
Thomas John Newberger, 32, was treated at North Arundel Hospital for swelling to his right eye and released, hospital officials said.
Mr. Newberger had reached the intersection of Delmar Avenue and Fifth Avenue about 2 a.m. when three youths got out of a car, walked up and told him they were lost and needed directions to Towson, police said.. When Mr. Newberger started to give directions, the three jumped him, police said.
As they were punching Mr. Newberger, one of the youths said, "We want all your money." They ran off before taking any money,
police said.
Man is robbed outside High's store
A Glen Burnie man was threatened, beaten and robbed Thursday night after he left a High's store at Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard and Amberly Road, county police said.
James William Liakins, 22, was not seriously injured. He told police three men confronted him in front of the store shortly before 10 p.m. After he gave the men money, one of them hit him in the chest with a stick, police said.
Mr. Liakins told police the three men drove off in a late-model, red Chevrolet Camaro.
Stereo equipment, jewelry stolen from apartment
Thieves broke into an apartment in the 2000 block of Harbour Gates Drive last week and stole stereo equipment and jewelry worth more than $5,000, police said.
On Thursday, a mailman told maintenance workers at the complex that the apartment's front window had been open for four days, police said.
The apartment was ransacked. Stereo equipment worth $2,200 and five watches worth more than $3,100 were taken, police said.
Teen beaten, kicked in school parking lot
A Southern High School student was beaten to the ground and kicked in the head Thursday afternoon by two youths who confronted him in the school parking lot, police said.
James C. Crandell, 16, received cuts and bruises in the attack. He was walking in the lot about 2 p.m. when a youth accused him of "talking trash" about him and other youths, police said. James told the youth he didn't want any trouble, but the youth punched him in the face, police said.
As the two struggled on the ground, another youth kicked James the back of the head, police said.
Woman's purse stolen at plaza
An Edgewater woman's purse was snatched about 6 p.m. Thursday as she walked to her car on the Parole Plaza parking lot, police said.
Anne C. Schaaf, 44, lost $200 and a $279 gold ring with an onyx stone, police said. Ms. Schaaf told police she had left the Sears store when a man ran up behind her and grabbed her purse.
Man tries to rape teen-ager in woods
A 15-year-old Jessup girl fought off a man who tried to rape her Thursday night in the woods near Wigley Avenue, police said.
The girl was walking in the 7400 block of Wigley Avenue shortly before 7:30 p.m. when a man in a small gray car offered her a ride, police said. The girl declined.
The man then told the girl that he wanted to have sex with her, police said. Again, the girl refused, and began to run away. The man got out of the car and caught her, dragged her into the woods, threw her on the ground and tried to take off her clothes, police said.
The girl broke free and ran to a nearby house, police said. The man was last seen driving south on Wigley Avenue toward Route 175, police said.
Men on garbage truck fall, injured in fight
Two men fighting on the rear of a garbage truck Friday morning were run over after they fell off the truck as it backed up on Barrack Lane in Ferndale, police said.
Tim Harris, 22, was dragged 25 feet, police said. He was in critical condition yesterday at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. The other man, Dennis Boyer, 34, was in fair condition at Shock Trauma. Both live in Glen Burnie.
The incident happened about 9:30 a.m. on Barrack Lane off Wellham Avenue in Ferndale. The two workers "either jumped off or were thrown off" their countywide trash removal truck as they fought, said Officer Randy Bell, police department spokesman.
