OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
* Bobby Sabelhaus, McDonogh, senior, quarterback -- Rated the nation's No. 1 quarterback in the preseason by SuperPrep Magazine, Sabelhaus (6 feet 6, 225 pounds) set a state record for passing yards (5,826) and completions (338) for the MIAA runner-up Eagles. Sabelhaus, who has thrown for 49 career touchdowns, amassed a personal-best 1,993 passing yards this season and 16 touchdowns -- three shy of the personal-best 19 he had as a sophomore. The Eagles were 22-6 with Sabelhaus in the lineup, including 9-0 during his junior year. Recruited by a number of schools, Sabelhaus has narrowed his choices to Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Duke and Boston College. * Mike Working, Mount St. Joseph -- Working transferred to Mount St. Joseph last spring from McDonogh, where he went, 2-8, then 7-3, then 9-0 over three seasons. He took over a program that returned just three starters -- sophomore quarterback Lucas Phillips and two defenders -- from a 3-7 team. Working, whose team was unranked in the preseason, combined the three returnees with several players up from an undefeated junior varsity. The Gaels faced six ranked teams, averaging 40 points over their first eight games and losing only to McDonogh, 21-18. The Gaels (8-1) finished with the No. 4 area ranking and the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association co-championship with Gilman. Two running backs, senior Jevon Norris and junior Archie Wannamaker, each gained more than 1,000 yards, and Phillips' two-year totals (2,585 career passing yards, 23 career touchdowns) have him on pace to break the state passing yardage record (5,826 yards) before graduating. * Tommy Polley, Dunbar, junior, linebacker -- Polley was a big reason the Poets have seven shutouts and have outscored opponents by 374-24. in 11 games as the second Baltimore City team to reach the state finals. Polley (6 feet 5, 195) had 17 sacks (41 career). His 163 tackles (106 solo and a safety) raised his career tackles to 337. "He hasn't stayed blocked since his freshman season," said Patterson coach Roger Wrenn. "I think he's the best player in Baltimore." Polley has four fumble recoveries and six interceptions, one for a 53-yard touchdown. As a tight end, Polley has 40 receptions for 667 yards and five touchdowns. In the Poets' 8-6 semifinal win over Cambridge, Polley (14 tackles, nine solo) made a touchdown-saving tackle at the Dunbar 8 after a 46-yard run, a tackle for a loss with Cambridge driving at fourth-and-1 at Dunbar's 5, and an interception to stop another Cambridge drive. "He stuffed us on some runs," said Cambridge coach Doug Fleetwood. "He's a fine athlete."
