A 12-year-old southwest city girl died early today after being shot outside a relative's house on North Collington Avenue, police said.
Police identified the victim as Kenya Rogers, who lived with her mother at the Woodington Garden Apartments in the 200 block of Diener Place in Irvington.
According to reports, the girl was visiting with relatives in a house in the 1900 block of N. Collington Ave. and was talking with several of them when she walked out the front door shortly before 1 a.m.
Moments later, in front of the house -- according to information provided to police investigators by people who remained inside the two-story rowhouse -- at least one gunshot rang out from the front of the dwelling. The girl was found on the pavement bleeding from the upper torso.
Police said a large-caliber bullet entered the girl's shoulder and traveled downward and lodged in her chest. An ambulance took the girl to Johns Hopkins Hospital. She underwent emergency surgery. Physicians pronounced her dead shortly before 3:30 a.m.
Investigators said it was not immediately known if the girl was an intended victim or was accidentally shot.
An autopsy was scheduled today to determine if the bullet that struck the girl was fired at close range or from a distance.
Police said no arrest had been made.
