San Diego Padres -- Agreed to terms with three minor-league free agents: IF Archi Cianfrocco, P Denny Harriger and OF Reuben Smiley.

Texas Rangers -- Named Butch Wynegar manager and John Tudor pitching coach of Single-A Charlotte (Fla.) and Rick Knapp pitching coach of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League team; Wynegar is a former Orioles minor-league manager. Announced that club president Tom Schieffer will replace Texas Gov.-elect George W. Bush as managing general partner.


NBA -- Announced the retirement of officials Jack Madden and Bill Saar. Named Detroit Pistons F Grant Hill Schick NBA Rookie of the Month and the Dallas Mavericks' Dick Motta IBM Coach of the Month.

Cleveland Cavaliers -- All-Star C Brad Daugherty, who hasn't played since February due to recurring back problems, will undergo back surgery next week, WEWS-TV in Cleveland reported.

Golden State Warriors -- Placed ex-Washington Bullets C Manute Bol on the injured list; he'll miss six to eight weeks after having arthroscopic right-knee surgery. Activated G Dwayne Morton.

Houston Rockets -- Waived F Chris Jent.

New Jersey Nets -- Announced that F Derrick Coleman (sprained right wrist) will miss tonight's game against the Miami Heat.

AEK Athens -- Signed G Rolando Blackman to a one-year contract, reportedly for $400,000.


NCAA -- Chose San Antonio as the site for the 1998 men's basketball Final Four. . . . Reinstated Georgia Southern basketball players Jeff Cliett and Dave Coradini, who were declared ineligible by the school Tuesday.

California, Pa. -- Announced that freshman basketball F Shea Fleenor has transferred from Marshall.

Pittsburgh -- Announced that starting G Andre Alridge will sit out the home opener tomorrow against Buffalo for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Tulane -- Announced the resignation of assistant football coach Buddy Geis.

Pittsburgh Steelers -- Signed DT Maa Tanuvasa to the practice squad.

Spirit (NPSL) -- Signed D Omid Namazi. Traded F Tarik Walker and D Steve Boardman to the Harrisburg Heat for F Franklin McIntosh. Agreed to terms with McIntosh on a two-year contract.

Arsenal -- Striker Paul Merson agreed to enter a rehabilitation clinic for at least six weeks of treatment of his admitted cocaine habit.
