Loyola beats Lafayette, 58-31

Lynn Albert came off the bench to score 16 points, pacing Loyola to a 58-31 victory over Lafayette in a women's college basketball game yesterday at Reitz Arena.

Patty Stoffey scored 14 points for Loyola (1-0) and Heather Abbot finished with nine. Lafayette (0-1) got 10 points from Maggie Hayes.

The Greyhounds led 26-15 at halftime and used an 18-1 run early in the second half as Albert scored nine to pull away.

* No. 3 Connecticut 107, Morgan State 27: Rebecca Lobo scored 18 points and had 13 rebounds, leading No. 3 Connecticut (1-0) past visiting Morgan State (0-1) in the first round of the Hartford Courant-Connecticut Classic. The Huskies led 55-11 at the half. Karla Warfield scored nine points for Morgan State, which made just 12 of 70 shots.

* Appalachian State 76, UMBC 43: Karolina Karqvist scored a game-high 15 points, leading Appalachian State (1-0) past UMBC (0-1) in the first round of the Sheraton Classic. Beth Kilby and Maret Artosalo each added 10 for Appalachian State. Kendra Damann scored nine points for UMBC and Eunice French had a game-high 11 rebounds.

* St. Peter's 63, UMES 45: Tonya Gertrude scored 18 points and five rebounds, and Mirja Sipila added 16, leading visiting St. Peter's over UMES, in a non-conference game. Tunya Brown scored 14 to lead UMES.

St. Peter's built a 34-20 halftime margin as it held UMES to 4-for-16 shooting.

* Navy 50, UNC-Wilmington 42: Adi Schneck scored 13 points and 12 rebounds lifting host Navy (1-0) past North Carolina-Wilmington (0-1) in the first round of the Navy Tip-Off Tournament. Navy will meet Niagara for the championship today at 3:30 p.m.

* East Carolina 89, Coppin State 61: Tracey Kelley scored 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds leading visiting East Carolina (1-0) past Coppin State (0-1) in a non-conference game. Rene Doctor led all players with 24 points and 19 rebounds for Coppin State. Natasha Parks contributed 12.

* Bowie State 73, Winston-Salem State 60: Kimberly McCall scored 14 points and had 13 rebounds lifting visiting Bowie State (2-0) over Winston-Salem State (0-3). Brandley Lemons added 13 points and Yolanda Matthews (Milford Mill) had 11 for Bowie State.

Denettra Parker scored 16 points for Winston-Salem State, which made only nine of 50 shots.
