Gertrude Merryman

Owned knitting shop

Gertrude Strobel Merryman, who owned a knitting shop and enjoyed playing bridge, died at Roland Park Place on Monday of complications from a fall. She was 88 and had lived at the retirement community since 1984.

For many years, Mrs. Merryman was a co-owner of the Sloan-Strobel Knitting Shop. She also worked at the Trousseau Shop. Both shops were on North Charles Street.

Born and reared in Roland Park, she was educated at the Roland Park Country School and made her debut at the Bachelors Cotillon.

Her first marriage ended in divorce. She and E. Gittings Merryman Jr. were married in 1950. He died in 1966.

A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of St. David's Episcopal Church, 4700 Roland Ave., Roland Park.

Survivors include a stepson, E. Gittings Merryman III of Monkton; a stepdaughter, Emily M. Hackett of Boston; and two nieces, Sally Strobel Diggs and Betsy Strobel Wilgis, both of Baltimore.

The family suggested that memorial contributions could be made to the Roland Park Place Residents' Assistance Fund, 830 W. 40th St., Baltimore 21211, or a favorite charity.
