1994 ALL-ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY GIRLS SOCCER TEAMS

THE BALTIMORE SUN

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

* Jess Marion, South River -- Voted the No. 1 player in the county by the coaches and a first-team All-State selection, Marion followed her 19-goal, second-team All-County sophomore season with 22 goals and five assists. She has 59 career goals with another year to go. Said coach Will Pharr: "Jess has size and speed and can get by anyone. Her first touch is incredible. When she has an opportunity, she makes the most of it."

COACH OF THE YEAR

* Will Pharr, South River -- An assistant on last year's 8-4-1 team, rookie head coach Pharr led South River to a 12-1-2 season highlighted by a 1-0 overtime win over Severna Park for the county championship. Pharr, a UMBC senior, didn't play high school or college soccer, but did play for Severna Park and Arundel club teams until he was 19. When he graduates from UMBC in August, he will look for a teaching job in the county and continue to coach. "I didn't know what to expect when we started. I didn't even have an assistant coach. I'm proud of the way the girls pulled together and played well day in and day out," he said.

FIRST TEAM AT A GLANCE

* Kristin Buckley, St. Mary's, Sr., D -- She led the Saints' defense to nine shutouts while still generating many scoring opportunities and collecting four goals and five assists.

* Shannon Chaney, Severna Park, Jr., G -- Quick and aggressive, Chaney, a three-year starter, had 13 shutouts in 18 games after ** registering 13 in 16 games as a sophomore. In two years, the Falcons have allowed only 15 goals in 34 games.

* Cassidie Dunbar, South River, Sr., MF -- With excellent field vision, Dunbar had 10 goals and 10 assists while dominating the middle of the field. She was the feeder for Player of the Year Marion.

* Maggie Dziuban, Chesapeake, Sr., D -- A three-year starter with good speed and dogged determination, she did whatever it took to make a defensive play.

* Liz Goodrich, Broadneck, Sr., D -- A captain and anchor of the defense, the poised and confident sweeper's strength was ball control. She triggered most of the team's plays.

* Jess Hines, Severna Park, Sr., D -- A four-year starter and a team captain, the diminutive (5 feet 2) Hines reads the field well and is "one of the best players" Joyce Stefancik has had in 16 years as coach.

* Erin Hon, St. Mary's, Sr., A -- With 14 goals and five assists, Hon, a first-team All-State repeater, was effective against all competition even though she was a marked person.

* Jessica Hull, Broadneck, Sr., MF -- She depended on speed, scrappiness and good footwork to lead the Bruins in scoring with goals and two assists.

* Kim Kesselman, Arundel, Sr., D -- Rated "the best defender in the county" by coach Paul Yannuzzi and able to cover up for teammates' mistakes, Kesselman was the main reason opponents got only 77 shots in 12 games.

* Denise King, Old Mill, Sr., D -- A three-year starter, two-time All- State selection and a genuine Division I prospect, King is the "quickest player in the first five yards" Bruce Sponsler has had in nine years as coach.

* Tracy Mrazeck, North County, Jr., A -- Gifted with an arsenal of skills, Mrazeck played goalie and midfield as well as forward, collecting 12 goals and five assists.

* Lindsey Poland, Severna Park, Sr., M -- An Olympic Development Program selection for four years, Poland had eight goals and eight assists. She possesses the "best ball touch of any kid I've coached," according to Stefancik.

* Kristen Smeby, Arundel, Jr., M -- Patrolling the middle of the field, she took almost all the corner kicks and restarts and led the team with eight goals and six assists.

* Carina Sonberg, Old Mill, Jr., A -- Sonberg started the season on defense, while King started it on offense, but after five games they switched places. Sonberg, in her third varsity season, then prospered with 15 goals in 11 games.

* Melissa Wagner, Chesapeake, Sr., A -- Displaying a nose for the ball, Wagner had a school single-season record 25 goals. Coach Lin Sullivan said of his four-year starter: "She knows when to break, and if she gets a half-step she doesn't get caught often."
