PLAYER OF THE YEAR
* Laurie Schwoy, McDonogh, junior, striker -- "No question, an Olympic-caliber player," said Carlos Juarez, coach of Schwoy's under-16 Olympic Developmental National Team. Voted the Catholic League's Player of the Year for the second straight season, Schwoy, a three-time All-City/County pick and an All-Metro selection last year, led the Eagles to their second straight Catholic League crown, a 21-0-2 record this season and a 40-0-2 unbeaten streak dating back to November 1992. Schwoy (5 feet 4, 115 pounds) scored 69 goals with 23 assists this year to raise her career totals to 146 goals and 58 assists. Ranked No. 5 nationally in USA Today, McDonogh is 57-3-3 with Schwoy in the lineup. It got hat tricks from her in a 3-3 tie with St. Mary's and the 3-0 Catholic Tournament title game win over St. Mary's.
COACH OF THE YEAR
* Frank Insinga, Perry Hall -- A former player at Towson State in the mid-1960s, Insinga, 50, had to adjust not only to new terminologies, but coaching techniques as well as having to overcome basic philosophical differences between himself and the players of former coach Pat Sokoloski. "We had our differences early," said midfielder Jessa Phoebus, "but things definitely got better." The Gators, with just one senior, were unranked in the preseason and were not even considered for ranking until midway through the year. Yet they posted a 14-3 record that included 13 shutouts with eight goals allowed and finished as 3A-4A state runners-up. It was the Gators' first playoff appearance since 1987. Three of the Gators' final four games were victories over Dulaney, Severna Park and C. Milton Wright -- teams ranked No. 3, No. 8 and No. 9, respectively, in the preseason. Perry Hall's only setbacks were in the regular season to No. 2 Fallston and Dulaney, and to No. 3 Centennial by 2-1 in the state title game.
FIRST TEAM AT A GLANCE
* Julie Baker, McDonogh, junior, midfielder -- Baker is a player with excellent field vision, versatility on offense and defense, and who plays great in the air. Baker, a transfer from North Carroll who possesses a long throw-in in the final third, had nine goals with 12 assists -- two of which came on the first goals in the Eagles' 3-0 Catholic Tournament title game win over St. Mary's.
* Abby Bausman, Dulaney, senior, midfielder -- Despite suffering a season-ending knee injury with three games left in the regular season, Bausman, an All-Metro pick last year, ranked as high as third among area scorers with 15 goals and 11 assists.
* Kara Cristaldi, McDonogh, senior, defender -- A second-team All-Metro pick as a midfielder last year, Cristaldi, a repeat first-team All-City/County pick, moved to sweeper for the first time in her life. Yet she overcame a career-threatening knee injury to stabilize the Eagles to 13 shutouts, tying last year's school record, and had five goals with 19 assists, to raise her career totals to 22 goals and 48 assists.
* Susan Fortkiewicz, Perry Hall, junior, defender -- A tireless and rugged player, Fortkiewicz (two goals), when not playing at stopper, drew the toughest marking assignments. Dulaney's Ali Schuch had scored twice with an assist in a regular-season 3-1 victory over the Gators but Fortkiewicz marked her scoreless in Perry Hall's 4-1 regional semifinal win.
* Liz French, McDonogh, senior, defender -- Part of a defense that has shut out 26 teams over two seasons, French is one of the steadiest stoppers around. French, who has four goals with nine assists over two seasons, maintained a 4.3 grade-point average, scored 1,480 on the Scholastic Assessment Test and has Harvard, Dartmouth, Lehigh and North Carolina interested in her athletic and academic talents.
* Nicole Froman, Loch Raven, sophomore, defender -- The impact Froman has had in two seasons is phenomenal. With the RTC 5-9 Froman in the lineup, Loch Raven is 28-3 with 20 shutouts and 14 goals allowed -- an 0.45 goals-against average. Froman (13 career goals, 12 career assists) has a throw-in that carries a lengthy hang time and plenty of distance. While anchoring a defense that allowed four goals against 11 shutouts this year, Froman scored three goals with 10 assists.
* Lisa Goddard, Perry Hall, junior, defender -- Rarely beaten, the speedy Goddard was the reason the Gators allowed fewer than a goal per game. "She's great in the air and, as a sprinter on the track team, one of her best strengths is against fast-breaking strikers," said Insinga.
* Robyn Harry, Loch Raven, senior, striker -- Harry, an All-Metro pick last year, netted 23 goals and 12 assists to raise her career totals to 77 goals with 34 assists -- both school records. She is a three-time All-City/County pick for the Raiders, who have won two 1A-2A division crowns, one Baltimore County title and one state title with her in the lineup.
* Bridget Harthausen, Loch Raven, junior, midfielder -- Harthausen was a force in the middle for the Raiders, scoring 14 goals with six assists to repeat as an All-City/County performer. Asked by coach Lou Menegatti to be more offensive-minded, she at one point was the team's leading goal scorer.
* Kate MacFarlane, Hereford, sophomore, goalkeeper -- MacFarlane has "great physical and mental tenacity," said Mike Curry of the Umbro Goal-keeping Academy. She allowed six goals in the nine games in which she played goalie while scoring seven goals and five assists as a field player (14 and 12 for her career). An Olympic Developmental player, MacFarlane had 26 saves in a penalty shootout upset of last year's 1A-2A state champ Loch Raven, stopped 14 shots in a shootout win over Catonsville, and had 14 in a 1-0 regional title victory over Towson, which landed the Bulls in the state semifinals for the first time in the school's history.
* Kristen McLewee, Dulaney, junior, defender -- Instrumental both offensively and defensively, McLewee had 11 goals and four assists. Success was rare down the middle against McLewee, whose skills, quickness and angular pursuit often forced teams to go over the top rather than risk her reversing their pressure into a counter-attack for her team.
* Heather Miskiewicz, Mercy, senior, striker -- Miskiewicz, an All-Catholic League first-team pick, scored 20 goals with six assists this year and has 49 goals and 13 assists over three seasons. She was among the area's top scorers despite missing three key games due to illness.
* Jessa Phoebus, Perry Hall, junior, midfielder -- Skillful with both feet, able to trap the ball and send it accurately either low or high to find teammates in stride, Phoebus (nine goals, 16 assists) was a gate valve between the Gators' offense and defense. A former Olympic Developmental Program player, Phoebus "scored mostly from outside the 18, but was an unselfish field general who played hard every minute of every game," said Insinga.
* Ali Schuch, Dulaney, junior, striker -- The speedy Schuch, a second-team All-Metro pick last season, scored 31 goals with 12 assists to earn All-City/County honors for the second straight season. The 5-5, 105-pound Schuch ranked third among area scorers throughout most of the year. She was at her best in a 3-1 regular-season victory over Perry Hall in which she scored twice and assisted on the other goal.
