Philanthropy to consolidate in Owings Mills

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The Weinberg Foundation, the area's largest private philanthropic foundation, with assets of $938.1 million, intends to consolidate its operations in a new Owings Mills headquarters by October 1995.

The $2 million project, slated to begin next spring in the McDonogh Crossroads Office Park, will be developed by MacKenzie/O'Conor, Piper & Flynn Commercial Real Estate Services LLC on behalf of Honolulu Ltd., a foundation entity.

Planning for the two-story, 20,000-square-foot project follows Honolulu Ltd.'s purchase of nearly three acres in the 40-acre McDonogh Crossroads in September.

"This represented an opportunity that was available immediately," said Robert J. Aumiller, a MacKenzie/O'Conor, Piper & Flynn executive vice president.

The Honolulu Ltd. project, being designed by Cochran, Stephenson & Donkervoet Inc. and constructed by Henry L. Lewis Construction Co., will become the 10th building in McDonogh Crossroads, a $50 million office park containing 360,000 square feet.

The foundation, established in 1959 by real estate mogul Harry Weinberg, will consolidate from 3900 N. Charles St. and 5518 Baltimore National Pike.

Mr. Weinberg died in November 1990, leaving the foundation the bulk of his wealth.

In its most recent fiscal year, the group provided $44.3 million in grants, according to data filed with the state attorney general's office.
