1994 ALL-ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY FIELD HOCKEY TEAMS

THE BALTIMORE SUN

COACH OF THE YEAR

* Lil Shelton, Severna Park -- The Falcons capped Shelton's 20th season with their third straight state Class 4A championship and by stretching their winning streak to 36. In the title game, they presented her with career win No. 255. What distinguished this team from her others? "This one had no superstars," she said. "Eleven different players scored. Everybody worked together, and the championship game epitomized that when we gave the game ball to the entire team. That's the way it will be in the trophy case -- the ball on the trophy to let people know it was such a team effort."

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

* Emily Plenge, Chesapeake, Sr., attack -- A first-team All-County repeater from last season, when she led Chesapeake with 11 goals, Plenge scored 17 this year and was acclaimed first-team All-State. One of the fastest field hockey players in the metro area, she has the speed to carry the ball at full throttle and beat defenders. "Emily is quick," coach Jerry Raab said. "Even if she's dTC dribbling, she can run faster than the defender who's chasing her." Raab is nominating her for the U.S. Field Hockey Coaches Association's high school All-America team.

FIRST TEAM AT A GLANCE

* Christy Atchison, Old Mill, sr., defense -- The Patriots' best all-around player -- "The best I've coached in my five years here," said coach Jo Funk -- Atchison sometimes was used on offense. She was the team's catalyst.

* Rachel Barrett, Chesapeake, sr., defense -- Considered by Raab as "one of the best sweepers I've seen in high school," Barrett had nine saves, alertly picking off shots after the goalie moved to play the ball. * Carrie Cole, Severn, sr., midfield -- Assertive, quick to the ball and a fast thinker, Cole had three goals and six assists. She threaded passes through defenders.

* Michelle Haynie, Arundel, sr., attack -- A soccer player her first two years at Arundel, Haynie learned field hockey quickly and became the school's most prolific single-season scorer (17 goals, one assist) in Clint Gosnell's five years as coach.

* Lisa Jewell, Annapolis, sr., midfield -- A team captain, the speedy and aggressive Jewell excelled on offense and defense and was the team's chief feeder.

* Katie McCordic, North County, sr., goalie -- A three-year starter who had 148 saves this year, McCordic brought strength to the team by learning to trust and communicate with her defenders.

* Diane Mooney, Severna Park, sr., attack -- Mooney, who had 10 goals and five assists for the state Class 4A champions, had one of the hardest shots on the team and exceptional take-away ability.

* Tobi Owen, Arundel, sr., midfield -- A hustler and spark plug, Owen, as the team's best stickhandler, set up Arundel's scorers.

* Cammie Owens, Chesapeake, sr., midfield -- A co-captain and second-team All-State selection, Owens contributed speed and deft ball-handling skills.

* Krissy Schmidt, Severna Park, sr., attack -- A strong right wing who had 10 goals and three assists, Schmidt set up scorers by bringing the ball down the sideline and sending it across the goal.

* Becky Shank, Severna Park, jr., defense -- A first-team All-State selection who had three goals and four assists, Shank seldom let a ball get past her.

* Megan Smith, Severna Park, sr., midfield -- Named first-team All-State, Smith had six goals and two assists and was the Falcons' playmaker. Shelton called her "the heart and soul of the midfield."

* Kim Tolbert, Meade, sr., defense -- A first-team All-County repeater who, according to coach Kelly Holden, "has a killer hard drive and dominates any game," Tolbert led Meade's breakaways.

* Cara Tracey, Spalding, sr., midfield -- Honorable-mention All-State, co-captain Tracey had three goals and five assists in leading Spalding to its best record (8-4-1) in its 16-year hockey history.
