The Carroll County commissioners yesterday approved the appropriation of $10,000 to $20,000 to pay for additional design plans for a full-size gym at the new Elmer Wolfe Elementary School in Union Bridge.
But the commissioners won't make a final decision on whether to go ahead with the construction of the new gymnasium until they receive bids for the project, said Richard Soisson, the county recreation and parks director.
Building the gym and a separate activities room would cost $675,000. The cost of the gym alone would be about $400,000, Mr. Soisson said.
The proposed gym is double the size of the gym that had been planned for the school.
It would have wood floors instead of vinyl, bleacher seats and room for two simultaneous gym classes.
Spokesmen for recreation councils in the New Windsor and Union Bridge areas have told the commissioners that they need a full-size gym to accommodate the area's growing recreation programs after school.
Beginning in fiscal year 1997, the Recreation and Parks capital budget will include $675,000 to help pay for full-size gyms and separate recreation rooms in all new elementary schools scheduled for construction.
Construction on Elmer Wolfe Elementary could begin in fiscal year 1996, before the money for larger gyms can be included in the budget.
