Vandals shot out the windows of 60 cars Sunday morning in Brooklyn Park, and police are asking for the public's help in finding the vandals, the commander of the department's Northern District said yesterday.
"It's kind of a hard case to solve," said Capt. Gary Barr. "We have detectives working on it diligently."
Police said the shootings occurred on 20 streets and that they think a BB gun or pellet gun was used.
Northern District officers were called to the 5700 block of Moore St. about 3 a.m. Sunday to investigate a complaint about a broken car window.
While one officer took the report, others searched the neighborhood for possible suspects.
As the officers fanned out, they saw several other cars with windows that had been shot out, police said.
Most of the cars were parked in front of homes in Guilford Manor. The area, which includes Church Street, is bordered by Seward Avenue on the north and Walton Avenue on the south.
Arundel Village and Hillcrest, farther north and east, also were hit hard.
The three communities form a triangle bordered by Walton Avenue on the south, Ritchie Highway on the west and the Baltimore City-Anne Arundel County line on the east.
The vandalism was also evident on Grove Park Road, Edgevale Road and Old Riverside Drive in the Riverside Park community, bordered by Belle Grove Road, the city-county line, the Patapsco River and Interstate 895.
Police think most of the vandalism occurred between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday but that there is some evidence the culprits may have started Saturday night.
Mary Agnes Lemay of Pasadena and her friend Sylvia Moulton were driving up Ritchie Highway about 8:30 p.m., police said, when, as Ms. Lemay, 52, turned left onto Doris Avenue, someone fired a BB through her rear window, shattering the glass.
Ms. Lemay and Ms. Moulton did not see who fired the shot, but they said they saw a large car behind them, police said. Neither woman was injured.
Anyone with information about the vandalism should call Detective John Ogle or Detective Bart Shilow at 222-6135.
