Dr. Arun B. Sapre, chief of neurosurgery and vice chief of the medical staff at Church Hospital, died Nov. 13 of a heart attack at his Hunt Valley residence.
He was 57.
He had been on the staff of Church Hospital since 1971 and was appointed chief of neurosurgery in 1974.
He had been chief of neurosurgery at North Charles General Hospital from 1973 to 1981.
He had been associated with the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Greater Baltimore, Mercy and St. Joseph medical centers, and had been assistant professor of neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University since 1992.
Dr. Louis Halikman, former chief of orthopedic surgery at Church Hospital and a friend and colleague for 20 years, said, "He was cosmopolitan in his approach to life and insatiably curious."
Dr. Sapre was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Royal Society of Medicine in London, the International Association of Medical Assistance to Travelers and the Foundation for International Education in Neurological Surgery. He was also treasurer of the Maryland Neurological Society and chairman of the medical ethics committee of the Baltimore County Medical Society.
He was a member of the advisory board of the Baltimore Pastoral Counseling Service.
A native of Nagpur, India, Dr. Sapre earned his bachelor's degree in 1955 at Nagpur University and his medical degree from the Government Medical College of Nagpur in 1960.
He completed an internship at the Lutheran and Cleveland (Ohio) Metropolitan General Hospital and a surgical residency at Mercy in 1966.
In 1970, he completed a neurosurgery residency at Dalhousie University-Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and was certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 1972.
He served in the Army Reserves from 1972 to 1977 and commanded the 531st Medical Detachment.
He was a member of the Garlic Club, an informal group of Church Hospital physicians who cook gourmet dishes, the French Club at Johns Hopkins University, the Joshua Slocum Sailing Society and the Single Malt Club.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and was active in the church's outreach program.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 3 at the church, 5407 N. Charles St., Baltimore.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, the former Tonya Troupe; two sons, Tyson Sapre of Timonium and Todd Sapre of Athens, Ga.; a daughter, Tara Sapre of Baltimore; four brothers, R. B. Sapre, P. B. Sapre, S. B. Sapre and V. P. Sapre; and three sisters, Chandre Bha Moghe, Malti Okhade and Tara Parande, all of India.
