1994 ALL-ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS

THE BALTIMORE SUN

BOYS RUNNER OF THE YEAR

* Jack Longley, South River, Sr. -- Longley aimed for the county meet all season and he was right on target as he captured the county crown in 16 minutes, 44 seconds. He finished second in the region meet at 15:58 before finishing a disappointing 28th in the states. The county was the real prize he was going for," said Seahawks coach Scott Baker, who was delighted when Longley transferred to South River from Severna Park before the start of his junior year. "Jack started a tradition of hard work and commitment. He left a legacy of great work habits and the kids who will be around here for the next few years will be better runners because of him."

BOYS COACH OF THE YEAR

* Ralph Luce, Arundel -- After leading the Wildcats to the county title last year while boasting the county's No. 1 runner in Geoff Warren, Luce showed that you don't need a superstar to win. "We won it with a bunch of no-names," said Luce, shortly after learning that his team held off Broadneck, 57-60, for the county crown. "I'm very pleased with the year we had and I'm pleased with how the team developed, especially the new runners. The Wildcats lost to Northern-Calvert in the 4A East regionals, but got their revenge at states, where they finished finished fifth and Northern finished sixth.

THE BOYS TEAM AT GLANCE

* Jason Berger, South River, Jr. -- Berger put down his vaulting pole long enough to capture seventh in the county (17:07), third in the region (16:35) and 23rd in the states. "He asked me if he would be any good if he came out and he came out and just transformed as an athlete confidence-wise," said coach Scott Baker. "He worked hard and filled our vacant No. 2 spot."

* Jon Carnes, Broadneck, Jr. -- Carnes captured runner-up honors at the regional meet after taking eighth in the county (17:08). "He was our leader all year long," said Bruins coach Gerald Kiple. "He worked hard all summer and I'm tickled to death to have him back next year."

* Tim Kelley, Arundel, Sr. -- Kelley was a big reason why the Wildcats were able to win their second straight county title. He finished 11th at both the county and region meets in 17:31 and 16:55, respectively, before coming in 31st at states.

* Mike Krug, Annapolis, Soph. -- This underclassman finished 10th in the county meet (17:28), 14th at regions (17:09) and was 43rd at the state meet at Hereford (19:27). "Mike runs with tremendous determination," said coach Brian Funk. "He's the most determined runner I have. When he goes out, he gives it everything he has. I see him as potential state champion down the road."

* Chris Long, Old Mill, Sr. -- After joining Old Mill as a 12-year-old freshman four years ago, Long progressed into one of the county's most consistent distance runners. He took fourth in the county (17:03), third in the region (16:09) and

was 10th at the state meet (18:43). "He didn't back off in any of the meets," said Patriots coach Gary Bater. "He went out and challenged himself and the course."

* Paul Mathieu, Severna Park, Jr. -- Mathieu placed second in the county at 16:57, fifth in the region at 16:33 and 14th at the state meet with a time of 18:49. "I talked him out of playing soccer this year and he finally decided to give it a shot," said Ed Purpura. "I was happy he did. He pushes himself to a point where he almost blacks out."

* Blair Morse, Arundel, Sr. -- Morse finished sixth at the county meet (17:07) and regions (16:36) before claiming 11th at states, where he recorded the third best county time of 18:44. "Blair ran the race of his life at states," said Luce. "His time amazed me."

* Ian Ross, Annapolis, Jr. -- Ross took third at the county meet in 16:57, was 10th in the region at 16:51 and finished 38th at states in 19:24. Ian is a true miler and he still needs another year to adjust to cross country," said Funk. "I think this season was just a prelude of what's to come."

* Dave Schilling, Broadneck, Jr. -- Schilling, one of the leaders on the Bruins' squad, took ninth in the county (17:21) and ninth in the region (18:09). "Dave had a great year but I expect even bigger things from him next year," said coach Gerald Kiple.

* Ryan Stevens, Chesapeake, Sr. -- Stevens established himself as the man to beat in Anne Arundel County this fall. After collapsing at the line and finishing 29th at the county meet, Stevens

rebounded and captured second in the region (16:08) and ninth at states, where he recorded a county-best time of 18:42. "He just over-exerted himself at the county meet," said Cougars coach John Maguire. "He's the best runner I've seen at Chesapeake in my nine years here."

* Chad Webber, Arundel, Jr. -- Webber, who also wrestles for the Wildcats, claimed fifth at the county meet in 17:06, seventh in the Class 4A East regionals at 16:43 and was 27th at states -- fifth among county boys in 19:03. "He worked hard and he was disappointed with his finish at states but he wasn't used to the [hilly] terrain," said Luce. "Now that I've seen the course, I'll train him differently."
