BOYS COACH OF THE YEAR

* Charlie Shoemaker, Wilde Lake -- The Wildecats won their first county championship since 1972, beating runner-up Centennial by seven points and third-place Oakland Mills by 22 points. The team also won its region without its top runner, who came down with a case of chicken pox, and it finished second in the state Class 1A division. The Wildecats also won the Howard County Invitational. Wilde Lake's girls team finished second in the county -- its best finish ever. A year ago, the Wildecats did not field a complete girls team.

BOYS RUNNER OF THE YEAR

* Greg Curtis, Oakland Mills, Sr. -- State Class 2A champ (14 minutes, 41 seconds); fastest overall time at state meet; county champ (16:11); Class 2A South Region champ (16:37); Oakland Mills course record (16:29); won six invitationals -- Howard County, Westminster, Arundel, Pallotti, Harford, Lancer; fastest time among runners from 83 schools at Harford; won 11 straight races; only loss was a third-place finish at Griffin Invitational; ran 43 straight varsity races starting as a freshman; All-County and second-team All-Met last season.

* Faisal Hasan, Wilde Lake, Jr. -- Third at county championships (16:41); missed regionals (chicken pox); ninth state Class 1A championships (18:52); beat Petro at Lancer Invitational; All-County last season; first and third in two quad meets; third at Howard County Invitational.

* Mike French, Centennial, Jr. -- Fourth at county championships (16:42); first at Class 3A East Region championships (17:05); second

at state Class 3A championships (18:19); ninth best time overall at state meet; won a quad meet; 10th at Westminster Invitational.

* Zach Tropf, Atholton, Jr. -- Fifth at county championships (17:26); fourth at Class 2A South Region championships (17:47); 11th at state Class 2A championships (18:55); third at Georgetown Invitational.

* Bryan Drake, Oakland Mills, Sr. -- Eleventh at county championships (17:46); third at

Class 2A South Region championships (17:39); 15th at state Class 2A championships (19:13); seventh and beat French at Westminster Invitational; four-year varsity runner.

* Marc Baron, Wilde Lake, Jr. -- Ninth at county championships (17:40); first at Class 1A South Region championships (18:30); 16th in state Class 1A championships (19:17); second in a quad meet; first-year runner.
