Maybe Don Mattingly's good glove was what Wade Boggs needed to win a Gold Glove.
The New York Yankee set an American League record with his ninth Gold Glove at first base, and teammate Boggs was honored for the first time at third base in awards announced yesterday.
Mattingly's ninth award, and fourth in a row, moved him past George Scott for the most AL Golds at first base. Keith Hernandez won 11 at first base in the NL.
Other AL winners included: outfielders Devon White (Toronto), Ken Lofton (Cleveland) and Ken Griffey Jr. (Seattle), shortstop Omar Vizquel (Cleveland), second baseman Roberto Alomar (Toronto), catcher Ivan Rodriguez (Texas) and pitcher Mark Langston (California).
