The College Board has chosen Westminster High School's Mary Kay Nevius-Maurer as an English teacher of the year for Advanced Placement (AP) classes.
Advanced Placement is a nationwide program in which high school students can take high-level courses and get college credit if they pass a rigorous test administered by the College Board, the same organization that administers the Scholastic Assessment Test.
Ms. Nevius-Maurer will receive her award at a conference Feb. 9 in Pittsburgh.
She lives in Manchester and has taught at Westminster High School for her 20-year career.
"I was pretty overwhelmed," she said. "I think it speaks well of Westminster High's program and not just my AP classes.
"I can't perform miracles alone in a year. They have these kids so well-prepared, and that's why I can take them so far.
"While half of my ego would like to say, 'wow,' I have to be realistic and say this is the work of a lot of people."
Last year, 123 students took the AP test for English, she said.
Ms. Nevius-Maurer was nominated for the award by Barry Gelsinger, supervisor of language arts for Carroll County schools. Mr. Gelsinger once received the award.
Ms. Nevius-Maurer was the Carroll County Teacher of the Year two years ago. She is now chairwoman of the English department at the school.
