Turnout rumor disproved

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Among the rumors swirling around after the election is one about the mysterious precinct in Baltimore that had a highly suspicious 100 percent voter turnout.

Not true.

Overall, about 43 percent of the city's voters went to the polls and none of its precincts had a turnout anywhere near 100 percent, according to a review by The Sun.

Even so, Democrat Parris N. Glendening did roll up impressive margins of 15-1 or more in some city precincts. In a precinct voting in the Hollander Ridge housing project in East Baltimore, Mr. Glendening won by a margin of 187-2. The turnout in that precinct, though, was less than 25 percent.

In one West Baltimore precinct, voting at Gilmor Elementary in Sandtown-Winchester, Mr. Glendening picked up an eye-popping margin of 152-1. Again, though, the turnout was less than 30 percent.

In the precincts Republican Ellen R. Sauerbrey won, meanwhile, the turnout was typically well above the citywide average.
