Morgan set to begin AD search

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Morgan State will begin its search for a new athletic director during the current school year, although school officials say a timetable to replace Ken McBryde has not been determined.

"We will begin to form a search committee this school year, and we'll move with all due haste on this matter," said Ricardo Perry, the school's acting vice president for student affairs. "We will invite all qualified applicants to apply."

McBryde was removed from the position he had held for 19 months Tuesday, and reassigned as a special assistant to the vice president for student affairs. Tanya Rush, an assistant vice president for student affairs, will serve as acting athletic director.

"I can't discuss the details behind Ken's reassignment. It's a personnel matter," Perry said. "Ken reports to me. Supervisors disagree on occasion. I think he's a nice guy, an engaging guy. I like to think we've had a good, professional relationship."

McBryde joined Morgan State in April 1993, while the school was being investigated by the NCAA for numerous violations. Morgan State then compiled an extensive report on its program, submitting it to the NCAA last spring. Perry refused comment when asked if McBryde's dismissal as AD and the pending results of the investigation were related. Morgan State is awaiting the NCAA's response to the report.

On Tuesday, McBryde said he had been fired. Yesterday, Morgan State released a statement that said: "Mr. McBryde has been fully advised in writing regarding the factors involved in the restructuring decisions. Contrary to recent reports, Mr. McBryde has not been fired."
