Elizabeth Ross Duncan Yaggy, who was active in charitable and other organizations, died Sunday of heart failure at the Carol Woods Health Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. The former Baltimorean was 83.
She was the daughter of Alexander Duncan, who pioneered the concept of the installment plan and founded Commercial Credit Corp. in 1912.
She was reared at her father's home, Cedarwood, on North Charles Street and made her debut in 1929 at the Bachelor's Cotillon.
She was a graduate of the Westover School and attended the Yale University School of Drama.
For many years, she was a board member of the Hospital for the Women of Maryland and aided in the hospital's merger that created the Greater Baltimore Medical Center.
During World War II, she rolled bandages for the Red Cross.
She had been president of the Bryn Mawr School board and was a member of Planned Parenthood and the University Players. In 1932, with the late actress Mildred Natwick, a Baltimore native, she joined the group's Theater Unit, which performed in Cape Cod in the summer.
In 1935, she married Edward Esher Yaggy Jr., who was president of the Gerotor May Corp., formerly the May Oil Burner Corp., makers of pumps and motors. The couple lived in Guilford, then in Dulaney Valley. They moved to Chapel Hill in 1964 after Mr. Yaggy retired.
He died in 1990.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Chapel Hill.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Yaggy of Baltimore and Duncan Yaggy of Chapel Hill; two daughters, Melanie Snedcof of jTC Larchmont, N.Y., and Carol Yaggy of San Francisco; and six grandchildren.
