DAVE SCUDDER
Volunteer work: After retiring as the owner of a business, Mr. Scudder took on another job as a volunteer.
He works several days a week for First Night Annapolis, the New Year's Eve celebration in the historic district, is an active member of the Anne Arundel Medical Center Auxiliary and is a volunteer at the Annapolis branch of the county library.
Volunteer's comments: "As far as First Night goes, at this point we're basically contacting the supporters of First Night and the performers. You have to get the performers lined up early.
"And there are a lot of little things that have to be done. Some of the things are mundane, but it takes time and somebody has to do it.
"I only live a few blocks away from the hospital and enjoy working there very much.
"At the library, anything that comes up, that's what you do. One thing I like about it is, it's not a set job -- doing the same thing time and time again.
"If you attack things with a little sense of humor, everything works better."
About the volunteer: Mr. Scudder and his wife, Priscilla, who also is a volunteer with First Night, have lived in Annapolis for 13 years.
During that time Mr. Scudder owned and operated Mid Atlantic Equipment Co. Before settling in Annapolis, he lived in Connecticut and has traveled a great deal.
"He is immensely valuable to us and has already logged in dozens of hours with us this year alone. He is . . . a hard and dependable worker," writes Alison Limoges, the volunteer coordinator for First Night.
