Moorman, Key take top honors

Jen Moorman and her Francis Scott Key teammates swept the top honors yesterday in the state Class 1A Central Region girls meet at Fort Washington Park in southern Prince George's County.

Moorman took first place in the individual competition with a clocking of 22 minutes, 37 seconds and Key won the team title with 34 points. Hereford was second and Central High was third.

The Key girls, coming off their first Carroll County championship, also had Christine Harner (23:04) in fourth place, Dawn Harner eighth (23:24), Kristen Engel 10th (23:28), Ali Jones 11th (23:40) and Kim Hugg 30th (26:31).

The Key boys pulled off something of a surprise in the 1A Central Region meet at Fort Washington, taking third place with 69 points.

The Eagles were five points behind second-place Hereford.

Wilde Lake took the boys team championship.

Senior Damon Battaglia was the top finisher for Key, getting fifth place in 19:02.

Four Eagles freshmen qualified for the states next week at Hereford.

They were Josh Hollman (sixth place, 19:10), Sean Deal (17th, 20:23), David Higgs (18th, 20:30) and Brett Ebersole (23rd, 20:47).
