Alcohol may have contributed to the death of an Annapolis man who broke his neck Tuesday night after falling down a flight of stairs at his home, county police said.
James Fred Hopkins Sr., 65, of the 900 block of Annapolis Neck Road was pronounced dead at his home. A relative called police shortly after Mr. Hopkins fell at 10 p.m., police said.
Police found Mr. Hopkins lying face down at the bottom of the stairs, his head against the wall. He may have broken his neck when his head hit the wall, police said.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, police said.
Man is charged with taking auto
An 18-year-old Annapolis man was arrested yesterday after driving off in a car that had been left in the 1900 block of Copeland St. with its doors open and the keys in the ignition, police said.
The car's owner told police he had walked his girlfriend to her apartment and had planned on returning to his car immediately, but ended up staying longer than he had anticipated. When he walked back onto the street at 2 a.m., the car was gone, police said.
Police said they spotted the car in Newtowne and began to follow it. The driver jumped out and ran into the woods, but officers caught him, police said.
