Business cares for pets while owners are away

Residents in the Linthicum-Ferndale area can now go on vacation and leave their pets at home with the peace of mind that they will be well cared for in their absence.

Linthicum residents Sharon Kelly and Andrea Burgess have started a new business called Wags to Whiskers, a pet-sitting service that offers in-home care for your pets whether you are gone for a week's vacation or just the day.

In addition to filling up the food dish, the business will take your pet for extended walks, do light grooming, administer medication and clean up behind your pet.

To make your house look lived in while you are away, they also will bring in your mail and newspapers and water house plants. This service is not limited to cats and dogs. Gerbils, birds, fish and other pets can be accommodated.

Kelly said the business evolved when Burgess was going on vacation and asked her to take care of her four cats. They both realized that it relieved a lot of stress, both for the owner and the pet if the pet did not have to be placed in a kennel. Kelly has two cats and one dog.

Wags To Whiskers is bonded and insured. Information: 684-3112 or 768-6476.

On Thursday, the Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights is asking the community to support a campaign, "Turn Off The Violence."

For just this one day, people are asked to turn off violent television programs, not listen to violent music, not attend violent movies, and to choose to solve problems in nonviolent ways.

This campaign is encouraged by the Maryland Federation of Womens Clubs and is sponsored by the National Crime Prevention Council.

Once again, schools in the community are collecting receipts, labels and bottle caps as part of several programs that enable them to acquire computer software and accessories, books, media material, other school related items, and cash. Residents are asked to send these items in with students or drop them off at the schools.

The items range from the Giant, Metro, and Safeway food stores, yellow bottle caps off two-liter Coke bottles and labels from Campbell's products.

Some schools are raising money by selling coupon books good at Marley Station stores. They sell for $5 each.

Here is a list of schools and their programs:

* St. Philip Neri, 6401 Orchard Road: Giant, Safeway and Metro receipts, Campbell's labels and Coke bottle caps.

* North Glen, 615 Furnace Branch Road: Giant and Metro receipts, Campbell's labels, Coke bottle caps, and Marley Station coupon books.
