DON AND LEA PRICE
Volunteer work: Mr. and Mrs. Price head the Anne Arundel County Support Group for Parkinson's Disease. Mrs. Price is president; Mr. Price, treasurer.
About the volunteers: Mrs. Price, who has Parkinson's, formed the group about four years ago with help from her husband when she could not easily locate information or help regarding the disease.
Mrs. Price is retired from the YWCA, where she established and headed the Displaced Homemaker Program that provides women with occupational skills. Mr. Price is retired from the federal government.
They have lived in Edgewater for 34 years and recently received Anne Arundel Medical Center's "Partners in Progress" award for their efforts with the support group.
Kris Powell, director of Anne Arundel Medical Center's Community Health Partnership, said, "The Prices exemplify the spirit of the Partners in Progress award. Theirs is a personal partnership and a true volunteer effort."
Lea Price: "Johns Hopkins has the Parkinson's Information and Referral Center, and we work under them. We're all part of the American Parkinson's Association.
"When I was diagnosed, I started looking around for information and found out there wasn't much in Anne Arundel to help a person [with Parkinson's]. I think people don't realize how widespread Parkinson's is.
"I get a great deal of pleasure from the group. It helps me to be able to help other people. I don't know what I would do without it.
"My husband works with me. It's been good for us, working on it together. It's brought us closer."
Don Price: "I do whatever I can to help. We'll continue for as long as we're able to. There definitely is a need.
"It's nice to get written up and all, but the important part is to get the information out about Parkinson's."
About the group: The support group meets at noon the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Medical Center's Education Center on Jennifer Road in Annapolis.
The meetings feature guest speakers, videos and discussions for people with the disease. A care givers group meets at the same time.
