Philip J. McCarthy, 76, an expert in economic and social statistics who helped develop the more sophisticated polling and sampling techniques that came into use after World War II, died of pneumonia Oct. 10 at Tompkins Community Hospital in (( Ithaca, N.Y., where he lived.

Bill Faure, 45, who gained international recognition for such television productions as the "Shaka Zulu" miniseries, died Tuesday of kidney failure in Johannesburg, South Africa. He directed "Shaka Zulu," a 1985 drama made in South Africa about the 19th-century Zulu warrior king.
