Mustering the militia


The Grand Militia Muster at Historic St. Mary's City Oct. 22-23 brings 17th-century re-enactment units from all over the East Coast. The units, which include groups representing the English Civil War and the James Fort Militia, will show their skills in pike drill, crossbow, swordplay and camp cooking on Governor's Field.

Admission is $6.50 for adults; $6 for seniors and students 13 to 18; $3.25 for ages 6 to 12. Historic St. Mary's City is on Route 5 in Southern Maryland. Call (301) 862-0990.


The American Revolution will come to life next weekend at Ida Lee Park in Leesburg, Va. More than 1,000 re-enactors will take part in the Battle of Leesburg, commemorating the 213th anniversary of the victory of American and French forces at Yorktown, Va.

Activities also include camp life, Colonial music, demonstrations of sewing and cooking, a marching fife and drum corps, a period church service and gunsmithing .

Among the highlights are battle re-enactments at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, an 18th-century dance at 8 p.m. Saturday and a concert by the Army's Fife and Drum Old Guard and Commander-in-Chief's Guard at 1 p.m. Sunday. The park is north of Leesburg on U.S. 15. Admission is free, but there is a parking fee of $5 per car. Call (703) 777-1262.
