25 Years Ago (Week of Sept. 28-Oct. 4, 1969):

* The first residents began moving into Hilltop, Howard County's new public housing community in Ellicott City. The development replaces substandard county-owned housing in the Fel's Lane area.

* Howard County Police Chief G. Russell Walters responded to criticism from the Howard County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU had criticized the police department because of a noticeable lack of black officers on the 51-man force. The chief's response was that only six employment applications had been received from non-Caucasians.

50 Years Ago (Week of Oct. 1-7, 1944):

* The West Friendship 4-H Club met at the home of Reginald and Charles D. Arrington. It was reported that the group netted $7.25 at a recent fund-raising lunch.
