An off-duty Anne Arundel County police sergeant fatally shot a 35-year-old Pasadena man who was brandishing a shotgun and arguing with family members yesterday, police reported.
Sgt. George Halpin, 36, of Pasadena fired his Beretta 9 mm service pistol once, killing Terrance Lamont Kane of the 8100 block of Elizabeth Road about 4 p.m.
Mr. Kane lived in a house trailer behind the home where the shooting occurred, police said. The trailer and home are in the community of Rockview Beach.
Investigators said Mr. Kane had been arguing loudly with members of his family -- including his stepfather, sister and mother -- yesterday afternoon.
During the argument, police said, Mr. Kane threw a beer can at his sister.
He subsequently got a shotgun from his trailer and fired it from outside the trailer door.
Officers said the shot Mr. Kane fired did not hit anyone in the
house.
Mr. Kane then reloaded the shotgun, and later knocked his sister the ground, police said.
Moments later, Sergeant Halpin, a neighbor, arrived. He ordered the relatives to get away from Mr. Kane and, calling Mr. Kane by name, told him to drop the gun, investigators said.
When the officer tried to take the shotgun from Mr. Kane, the shotgun was pointed at him.
Investigators said that Sergeant Halpin fired his pistol. Where the shot struck Mr. Kane was not immediately clear.
Mr. Kane was pronounced dead at 4:57 p.m. at North Arundel Hospital.
Sergeant Halpin, an 11 1/2 -year police veteran who works in the patrol division, will be placed on administrative leave pending further investigation, police said.
